EXERCISE SPOTLIGHT: Draw a Sword + Band 💪

Draw a Sword + Band is an advanced exercise that requires a significant amount of strength in the shoulder muscles and the Rotator Cuff.

When teaching this exercise, there are a few key concentration points instructors should be looking for to encourage control and correct technique.

KEY CONCENTRATION POINTS:

Lead out with the elbow first, then extend the arm, try not to use too much momentum.
Rotate the hand as you extend the arm, finishing with the thumb up toward the ceiling and the palm facing forward.
Sit up tall, lifting through the crown of the head, neutral spine, T-zone tight.

Find this exercise in our Ball, Circle & Band Course, designed to expand your repertoire and give you even more ways to challenge your clients. by @studiopilatestraining

Joseph Pilates said something that every Pilates instructor should hear.

And decades later, it perfectly explains why the way we cue an exercise matters so much.

We dive into this (and plenty more!) in Episode 9: The Studio Pilates Cueing Formula. 🎧

A little behind the scenes look at life on courses lately! 📸

Swipe through to see some moments captured across our recent courses.

One of our favourite parts of practical training is seeing students learn alongside each other, put their skills into practice and experience what it’s really like to step into the role of an instructor, after completing their pre-course study.

We always love seeing your journey through your eyes too, so keep tagging us in your photos and videos so we can follow along 🖤

Your mind deserves time to rest too. 🖤

For many of us, movement can offer that space, a chance to switch off from everything else and simply focus on what we’re doing.

This World Mental Health Day, we’re reminded that looking after our mental wellbeing can take many different forms.

However that looks for you, make some space for it today.

Most instructors have probably done this at some point… 👀

And while it can come from the best intentions, it might not be helping your clients in the way you think.

From dancer, to mum, to future Pilates instructor 🖤

For our Matwork student Jas, Pilates has been part of her life for years, growing alongside her background in dance.

Her passion for Pilates grew even further after attending classes taught by Jade Winter, CEO and Co-Founder of Studio Pilates and the Studio Pilates Training Academy, bringing her Pilates journey full circle as she now steps into instructor training herself.

After becoming a mum, Jas felt drawn back to teaching, with a goal of working with tweens and teenagers, as well as helping dancers refine their Pilates technique and build strong foundations to support their movement.

Thank you for sharing your story with us, Jas! by @studiopilatestraining

Why is the VMO muscle so important? 🦵

As Pilates instructors, understanding how movement can strengthen specific muscles helps us make more informed choices when instructing and programming for our clients.

The Vastus Medialis Oblique (VMO) plays an important role in knee stability, helping to keep the Patella tracking correctly as the leg extends. When the VMO becomes weak or isn’t functioning effectively, this can contribute to poor tracking of the Patella and knee pain.

Swipe through as we explore the role of the VMO and two Pilates exercises that can help develop VMO strength.

Want to learn more? Head to our website to read the full article, where we cover more of the best Pilates exercises for developing VMO strength, how fluid, swelling or injury around the knee can affect the VMO and more. by @studiopilatestraining

Consistency has always been at the heart of Pilates.

The changes we see through regular practice happen over time, as movements become more familiar, control develops and the body grows stronger and more capable.

As instructors, we get to witness that progress firsthand. From the first few sessions to the moment a client realises they can do something they couldn’t do before. by @studiopilatestraining
