Introducing - Abbie Sunter

Abbie Sunter is a ceramic artist who draws heavily on the themes of folklore, myths, music and the natural world. Her work aims to reconnect the viewer to nature through memories of place the familiarity of folklore. Using animals as a vehicle to explore our
complex emotional connection to the world around us, both past and present.

Abbie works primarily in stoneware and terracotta, and uses traditional hand building techniques like coiling to create her one a kind sculptures.

✨ BANKS MILL TAKEOVER — 26TH SEPTEMBER*✨

I’m SO excited to finally share this with you!

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been working hard alongside @sunter_studio to put together an amazing Banks Mill Takeover at Derby Market Hall and I cannot wait for you to see what we’ve been creating!

This is your chance to discover some of the incredible artists, makers and creatives based at @banksmillstudios all brought together under one roof.

You’ll find stalls from:

Printmakers
Photographers
Painters
Sculptors & makers
Embroiderers
Ceramicists
Jewellery makers
And so many more!

There will also be a fantastic selection of creative workshops and activities throughout the day.

I’ll be hosting a super relaxed, mindful art session — the perfect opportunity to slow down, get creative and settle into those cosy creative vibes.

10am–5pm

And it’s all happening on the same day as Derby Feste , so why not make a full day of it and come and support some of Derby’s amazing independent creatives?

The final piece!

This beautiful fella has finally gone to his forever home to be their new guardian. Lorek, a character from Phillip Pullmans, The Golden Compass has a special meaning for the family that commissioned him and I’m so pleased they get to enjoy him watching over them every day now 🥰

I’ve been quiet on my socials lately and that’s because I’ve been concentrating on getting @wedgeceramicworkshop ready to open by September!

Not sure where I’m finding the time at the moment but between 5:30am starts for the gym, work, building @wedgeceramicworkshop and commissions… I have rather a lot on lately 🤪

And yes if you look closely, you can see how tired my eyes look 😅

I am enjoying glazing this piece though, it’s an opportunity to slow down and enjoy the process, can’t run through this part.

I didn’t get time to film the making of Lorek’s armour but just know it involved paper templates and clever measurements to make it fit - LIKE A GLOVE 🧤

I’m pretty sure I’ve managed to dry him out nice and slow now despite the insane heat last week.

We’ve not fired the kiln for about 2 weeks because of it 🥵

I think I’ll leave him to keep drying whilst I’m on holiday because it can’t hurt to make sure this piece is bone dry before going for his first firing.

I can’t wait to glaze him though 😮‍💨I have plans for that armour 😎

This weekend was very warm in the studio but I’m glad I’m not working in it this week 🥵

This commission piece only has one job now and that’s to not dry too quickly 🫠

The main part of the sculpture was the polar bear head, then I had to measure and create paper templates for the armour design that was then made out of clay and added to the head later on.

Part of the armour also forms the back and surround of the piece which will eventually hang on a wall - hence the inbuilt wall hanging slots in the first image - always thinking ahead me 😎
