POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

I just spent however long building and carving this THING, knowing full well it’s highly unlikely to make it though to completion unscathed.

So many fragile bits.

Things I am working on today…

The munted fork is for scale.
I wanted to show you how big this pot is while I’m building it because it will shrink to a much less impressive size when fired and you won’t be as impressed when I moan about how heavy and difficult it was.

Roughly 2 & a half to 3 forks high.

@mandycoolen told me to make a really big sweat jar.
Thanks Mandy.

No really…

I think big is good,
if I can just get it safely to the finish line.

I like to play with clay.

Always trying different things.

But after some recent pottery disasters & disappointing kiln loads… {bits falling off, cracks appearing, glaze problemos}… it was extra nice to unpack this lustre firing to find everything super dooper.

I do love lustre. It just adds that extra sparkly magic to everything.

When things look grim, just add lustre.

My fancy new pottery shed is slowly filling back up again with fun bits & bobs to send out into the world.

Maybe everything’s gonna be alright after all.

Huzzah!

I made this tutorial for a group of potters in Port Lincoln who wanted to know what those clay stick-on thingies are and how to make them…
Well they’re SPRIGS & here is part 2...
How to make sprig moulds.

*please note, there are other ways to do this, this is just a method that works best for me.

Just another person doing a boring thing and oversharing.

But I’ve been tormented by these mouldy windows staring at me daring me to clean them and FINALLY, the deed is done… hurrah!
You can’t imagine what a relief it is to finally do this... even though it was hell, it’s over now.

I been waiting for someone else to do it but unsurprisingly no one offered…

And that is life.

Check out the lean on this pot

Come on
I lean.

I worked with a woman called Eileen, many years ago, and whenever we spoke her name we would lean on things and think we were incredibly funny. Poor her, sorry about that lol.

I’m not optimistic about the success of this pot, anticipating further leaning when I apply huge heat to it in its firing… but still… gonna give it a go. We shall see.

Meanwhile, spring is off to a good start with some weird and wonderful flowers popping out in the garden. Some that I have never seen before.
Nice surprises

And then cake, for a friend, for their birthday. The same friend that I Eileen-ed with, all those years ago.

And then leftover cake for me & my fat arse.

Made some creepy mudmen in an attempt to exorcise my demons.

It hasn’t worked.
But maybe that’s because they’re not finished yet.
I still have to cook them.

I used to have a reoccurring nightmare, when I was very little, about being chased by a horrible mud man and put in a room that he filled up with mud until it reached the ceiling and suffocated us all. It was terrible. Terrifying. And it wasn’t until decades later, when I started making things with mud that I discovered the Golem and realised that was the creepy freak from my awful dream.

Flowers from the garden
And a vase from my own hands
Made from clay

………………………………
I returned home yesterday to find my street full of fire trucks and my own driveway cordoned off
And I thought “shit! I left the kiln on…”
But huge relief, our house has not burned down. A tree fell and took out the powerlines.
And magically all these wonderful people showed up and took care of everything.
Lucky to live in the lucky country.

……………………………..
I’ve been on a massive downer lately
Wondering
How can I do better?
How can I be better?
How can I contribute to the world and make it a better place?

I don’t know.
I am lost.

But hey, the house is still here and it could always be so much worse.

A blast from the past.

I’d completely forgotten about making this thingy.
Probs cos it was way back in 2010.
A lovely project… a bunch of artists, organised by SCREAMDANCE (aka @chrisedser & @sambarratt.design) customised the same wooden shape, called a “Schaffa”, in endless different ways.

This was mine.
Who knew… i still got that weird thing for boots
