After college I worked as a barback at Stars Nightclub, on the seawall of Galveston Island, Texas. I’m pretty sure the building used to be an old KFC franchise. We were one of only two gay/queer bars on the island (talk about heated rivalry lol). We had drag nites every day of the week - I can’t remember her name but the hostess’ drink of choice was a double Redbull vodka, that’d I’d trot up to stage every fifteen minutes or so. One time, while I was wearing my usual uniform of only booty shorts, she reached down and lifted me above her head one-handed by the crotch. I was the twink for the show (and also the twink to mop the floors and scrub the toilets).

Stars was great because it was truly third coast. We’d get the rich gays in v-necks from Houston, meth-y locals, deeeply closeted married rednecks who drove 50mi to be anonymous, and the straights on the seawall who yelled slurs at us. There was always a sense of freedom and danger in the air. This was a place I learned about real queerness. The t-girls too poor to afford gender-affirming care. The straight twinks selling to older married men. The butch dykes who made me feel safe. The elders who survived the AIDS crisis. I heard so many stories while washing glasses and scrubbing floors.

One night a regular, a guy in his mid sixties, had tipped us all out in silver dollars. I snagged one for the novelty (and maybe to pawn it later). The bar was failing and shut down a day or two after.

I carry this coin in my pocket for protection, to feel connected to my community, and when times are tough, as a reminder that things could always be worse. It anchors me to queer Texas, and I also often think about how many other queers have held this coin in their hand in 100+ years. by @superpattern

During the full moon, last Friday I had to say goodbye to my best friend. Squash had cancer and wouldn’t make it with or without surgery. I had to let him be at peace.

Squash grew up in a grad school party house, so he loved people and subwoofers didn’t phase him. He was so dang smart - I called him a velociraptor because he would stand up and jiggle doorknobs to try to open them. No cabinet ever remained unopened and unchecked. He was also a rugby player and parkour kitty, just throwing his body into the air after toys with no regard for what was in front of him, and bouncing off perpendicular walls just for fun. He was a natural hunter, and was only interested in treats if you threw them across the room so he could catch them mid-air or chase them down. He loved the outside and demanded to go out so he could eat grass like a little cow. He knew exactly how to manipulate me, either with the perfect pitch in his meow or by staring at me unblinking from across the room. He loved booty spanks and wanted it harder than you’d think. He would pet me when he wanted pets, and would clean my head religiously. He was the sweetest boy and never bit or scratched anybody - he was nothing but love.

All his favorite spots still have his indentation and I never want them to go away. I buried him under a Palo Verde tree, so he’ll live on and bloom beautiful yellow flowers every spring.

You’ve been my shadow for over a decade, it will be so hard to be without you. I see you everywhere and it breaks my heart. I love you so much buddy.

RIP Squash

I love @themuseumofhumanachievement so dang much. They allow (and encourage!) me to be the weirdo that I am. Truly a vital anchor/foundation/gift to the Austin arts scene. Here’s some documentation by @serenamakesthings from this past PPT Nite. It was sooo much fun to rant at a bunch of strangers (again) 😝 taken in The Museum of Human Achievement by @superpattern

interaction has been on my mind a lot lately, and I love seeing how this piece turned out and facilitated people making things! lol it was such a treat seeing elders recognize the form and little ones watch a spiral unfold before their eyes for the first time 🥹 Re:Match is open until July 20th, go check it out!!

so grateful to be included in such a heartfelt show celebrating ten years of @northernsouthern !!!

there are a couple more opportunities to check out the show and peep this new piece, which is made up of one continuous, unbroken vector I transformed a million times in illustrator ♾️ (I was asked last night if it was AI-generated 😤😑)

“reverberation echo patterns” 2023.

so excited for this piece to be included in FROM, an outside/inside show organized by @northernsouthern !!

still thinking about relationships, proximity, intimacy and interconnectedness, I used a puzzle piece I made during @irl_moha CATS+ residency as a relief stamp for the sculpture, and from that made a series of rubbings on various types of antique paper.

FROM is on view June 10-25 both in the gallery and in the wild. Head to northern-southern.com/2023/from for a detailed treasure map of where to find our sneaky art around town. taken in Austin, Texas by @superpattern

soo excited to be included in this fun new show at All the Sudden!! Tails is an exhibition themed around works made in collaboration with or inspired by the artists’ animal companions!! And of course Squash is my forever muse 🐆

7.5 years ago I fought off an 8yo girl at @austinpetsalive to adopt Squash (given name Ignatius). if you’ve met Squash you know what a character he is; so generous with his affection and smart as a velociraptor (Squash regularly jiggles the door handles to see if he can get outside).

it’s so nice to be working on a piece that’s also serving as a process of active appreciation. big thanks to @emilyelisabethlee @henry.smith.henry.smith @starbuckra for organizing!! taken in Austin, Texas by @superpattern

Y’all!! I’m so happy to have had the opportunity to show new work at @northernsouthern along with the incredibly talented @starbuckra and @muelhaupt .

For our show ‘fitting’ I made a series of three dimensional puzzles and accompanying diagrams I’m calling ‘holding pattens’. While making these pieces I was thinking about connection and intimacy, and the way we define ourselves by the people and objects we surround ourselves with.

It’s been so satisfying watching people engage with these puzzles, struggling valiantly to solve them or giving up and creating their own mini-sculptural compositions.

If you haven’t had a chance to see the show yet, this is our final week of ‘fitting’! The gallery will be open Thurs-Sat 2-6pm, with a closing reception on Saturday from 4-6pm. I’d love to see ya there!! taken in Northern-Southern by @superpattern
