SAM MARCOS … the beloved @ss__a____m Sam Mayer aka poolboy performed at @mothershipstudios.smtx last nite on the occasion of the opening Lacuna Vitae | The Void of Life curated By Juliette M.M. Hererra Nickle, @jacquelineoverbyart Jacqueline Overby.

Anyone watching can see that you’re watching too. A livestream of a live performance. Just when I think I have a mental grasp on his work, Sam always surprises me. As someone who endlessly rehearses conversations in her head toward my endeavor of appearing effortless, Sam’s ability to blur the line between scripted and improvised dialogue NEVER ceases to amaze. I don’t care what’s real…I adore not knowing and the artifice of it all. The stream latency was like a song in the round…a perpetual canon at the unison.

I’m privileged to dip my toes in your pool my friend.

FROM @mothershipstudios.smtx :: The term “Lacuna Vitae” combines “Lacuna,” referring to falling short of a desirable amount, as well as to the hollow spaces between bones, and “Vitae,” meaning life. This phrase encapsulates the central theme of the exhibition: exploring the mysterious, often elusive essence of life through artistic representation, particularly when it comes to depicting the human form.

MotherShip Studios is a women-built, owned, and operated art space in Central Texas founded in 2020 by Courtney Peterson and Jacqueline Overby. Located inside an industrial warehouse park along San Marcos Highway 80, we offer affordable studio spaces for local artists, and various community programs hosted inside a 360 sq ft gallery space with eight surrounding artist studios. In 2023, MotherShip Studios developed the first San Marcos Studio Tour as part of their annual programming efforts.

Richard Simmons was an icon, legend, health advocate, comedian, and clown. But most of all, he was a community builder. The majority of his classes were regulars, and THEY WERE TIIIIIIIGHT. It was honestly a bit hard to break in :) but I do think it’s the LA way to be skeptical of newcomers. In fact, during the recording of Richard’s last workout video “Project Hope,” I was helping his oldest and longest member of this community fill out her w9 info. You should have seen the panic on the person’s face that swooped in and took that burden away from me. It didn’t feel great, but I get it. (Hang tight, I am going somewhere with this.)

Recently a childhood friend (really a ghost from the past) visited me in Austin, Texas. She hadn’t been back to Texas since she fled after high school, and seemed baffled that I could still live here. “With how Texas feels about abortion and trans children, and. . . “ And I get it, but I really don’t know where I would find a better community.

Seriously! I LOVE YOU AUSTIN. There is no other city in the world that I could organize a Richard Simmons Flash Mob Party Bus without being a millionaire. Forever thank you to @andrea.f.hyland at Fancy Fancy for always helping me make my events flawless @almostrealthings for your amazing tour bus! @blandperson for costumes @lowpressuresalesman for video and these amazing photos by @yourfriendmere

These photos are just my top favs from our first stop at @traderjoes And yesssss I’m aware that the majority of these photos feature my bestie @burdie_g I cannot help that she embodies absolute joy and kindness most of the time and is extremely photogenic ❤️ and comment here if ya wanna be tagged and I missed you Richards! More epic shots to come! #riprichardsimmons #riprichardsimmons🙏🏽🕊️

Mark your calendars for the opening reception for “Re-Match: A Cage Match Project Retrospective” on July 6th from 1-8pm in the gallery of The Museum of Human Achievement. With the significant support of the City of Austin Cultural Arts Division’s Elevate grant program, CMP has offered CMP alums to receive continued financial support through an artist stipend plus a material stipend. On opening night, CMP invites the public to celebrate new and existing artwork by featured artists and to revisit past CMP projects through a series of framed photo documentation of previous CMP installations. Over the duration of the exhibition, two interactive workshops will take place, open to the public.

Featured artists include Jesse Cline @superpattern , Emily Lee @emilyelisabethlee , Annie Miller @annienanniebooboo , Rachel Means @rachelsreflections , and Emma Rossoff @emmalouiserossoff . In addition, workshops are led by multidisciplinary artist and independent curator Michael Anthony García @mrmichaelme and performance artist Sean Ripple @ripple1213 to provide essential and inspirational information about their curatorial and artistic practices.

As we lead up to the opening, we will share more information about the showcasing artists, past installations, and sign up information for workshops. Stay tuned for more!

Big shoutout to Diar Enayatpourr, @comrade.diar CMP intern for 2024, for designing the poster and administrative assistance with our website.

2/13/22: A Pit Fire with Partial Shade. This was the BEST. We dug a massive hole and welded a huge grate and fired ceramics and baked potatoes in it and had an unpredictable exhibition & dinner in the warehouse afterward. Everyone helped everyone🧣
