delighted to share the news that ‘Recurrent Intervention Modalities of Expanding a Moment’ (Virginia Woolf) 2021 has been selected for acquisition for the ARTS COUNCIL COLLECTION 2022.

grateful to for the invitation to submit my work and to the selection panel, thank you for this support. I am thrilled to know this work will be experienced by people in public spaces.

recurrent intervention modalities of expanding a moment, 2021, borrows it’s title from Virginia Woolfs essay ‘on being ill’. Through the channels of creative process Buttner attempts to free life by recurrent interventions, expanding a moment into duration, throwing light on the virtual elements and possibilities that surround and condition what has been actualised in the sculptural works, live performance and film. Giving form to fundamental questions, how we relate to and make meaning in relation to other bodies, registers of mediation, the body as a cultural signifier, one presented to another in a moment of communication exchange. How we respond to mediations of pain, exploring the political and poetic haptics of the everyday.

studio notes …

the addition of colour rubber parts, draws the eye towards particular points, shifting attention between the central knot and its projecting elements….. periphery as a place where attention moves beyond the centre. a material change that opens up different possibilities for experiencing the work. by @susanbuttner

Intimate Architectures: Periphery

A container of gestures, a living entity that continues to form and reform. Objects are removed, replaced, introduced. Sculptural forms are moulded and cast; paintings evolve and retract. The space itself, marked by accumulated use, is left as found what persists at the boundary is not only bodily or material, but architectural.

Collaboration runs through the work as method, not addition: live vocal performance by Jess Kavanagh, a poem by Jennifer Lindsay Gray, harp by Mairéad Duffy, each a response folded into the installation’s ongoing life.
