Happy Native American Heritage Month! 💗 I’m so excited to announce my newest poetry collection, Nimagirashic (I Love You), coming February 1, 2027!

I LOVE love, and as a huge lover girl, it only made sense to write a whole book about it! From romance and heartbreak to family, friendship, culture, and all the ways we give and receive love, there’s a little bit of everything in these pages. Nimagirashic means “I love you” in the Hidatsa language, making this collection even more special to me.

I’m especially thankful for the incredible Indigenous women who shared their time, creativity, and love to help bring this book to life! Julissa Andrade / Pax Paints @paxpaints (Mexican-American artist) created the cover art, Chauné Mountainsong @sweethoneyrael (Afro-Indigenous, Picuris Pueblo) wrote the foreword, and Jennifer Gougé @ambewiisinin (Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe and Higuayagua Taíno) contributed the epilogue. I’m so grateful for each of you and the beautiful creative visions you’ve brought to this project!

We’ll also be celebrating with a Valentine’s Day-themed book release party in February, with more details coming soon!

Introducing Seen at Santa Fe, a series through @iifc.media @iifc.hq highlighting Afro-Indigenous representation throughout @santafeindianmarket and @sovereignsantafe Cover pictures: @adriftadream.photo ✨

Over the next few days, I’ll be sending out interviews and stories with some amazing people I met throughout the Market, highlighting the many ways Afro-Indigenous people are showing up in fashion, art, film, and community.

I had so much fun interviewing @sweethoneyrael Chauné Mountainsong. She actually found me the way we always seem to find each other, with a smile and an up nod from across the room. Very serendipitous, like we were meant to cross paths.🫶🏾✨❤️

First up, Chauné on finding your people, representation in fashion and film, and making space for all of who we are. Read Full Story in bio ✍️👩🏽‍💻@Mariquewrites by @sweethoneyrael

I went to indigenous pathaways to check out my friend Anpa’O and Chauné’s performance and films.
I missed Anpa’o but I am still so proud and excited for her like crazy :) I did get to see Chauné’s performance girl you and Natalie did that!! So proud of you guys!
I myself start back in film school this Monday so wish me luck!! And I just found out that my semester is now covered!! Still going to be applying for more scholarships though #afroindigenous #nativesinfilm #indigenousfilmmaker #indigenousfilm #afroindigenousfilm by @sweethoneyrael

Extending our heartfelt gratitude to our incredible Women’s Panel who generously shared their stories, wisdom, and lived experiences at the IndigenousWays Film Festival. 🧡

It was an honor to witness the films you created and helped bring to life, and to hear your truths through this intimate conversation.

You reminded us of the power that art and storytelling has to heal, connect, and transform us as individuals and a community.

Please join us in thanking these extraordinary women for sharing their voices, journeys, and brilliance: Chauné Mountainsong (Afro-Picuris Pueblo), Ramona Emerson (Diné), Alika Mteuzi (Caddo, Cheyenne, & Arapaho), and moderator, Dr. Sheila Rocha (Tarasco & IAIA Chair
Associate Professor )

I keep coming back to New Mexico for many reasons, but one of the deepest is this: the people I’ve met here who feel, to me, inseparable from the land and the light.

There are some people with whom making images feels less like arranging a shoot and more like entering a shared frequency: a way of seeing, feeling, and listening that already exists between you. Chauné is one of those people for me. I’ve photographed her every time I’ve come here for years now, and each time it feels like returning not just to a person, but to a conversation with beauty, story, and place.

Some places become home because they allow you to come home to yourself. Some people do too. Maybe that’s what I’m always reaching for here: not just imagery but the rare feeling of being recognized by a place. by @sweethoneyrael
