Clive Culbertson & Rip Off Records Ireland Belfast 1979 Culbertsons New Wave killer 7” was well-earned “record of the week“ in Sounds magazine and was picked up by Logo Records for UK. This was Clive’s first solo attempt after the demise of his combo No Sweat (Rip Off 1978). George Doherty formed Rip Off Records back in 1978. Doherty was responsible for the production on many of the earlier N. Irish punk releases, including Big Time Rudi’s classic debut 45 on the Good Vibes label and the Outcasts first single Frustration on IT Records. George had been working for Emerald Music, founded in 1964 by Mervyn Solomon who had been the first person to record both Rory Gallagher and Van Morrison. George recalls how the label came about “It all came about in 1978, I went up to the boss Mervyn Solomon and told him that I wanted to record a couple of new groups. He initially refused but I insisted and suggested that I form my own label. After some consideration he phoned me back, he gave me £500 and told me that when that was finished, I was finished, that’s how Rip Off Records started”. Most Rip Off releases came with picture sleeves. Around 50% of these were made from brown paper bags with the artwork printed over the bag, because it was cheap. Hard to get hold of, even when they were first released, . #cliveculbertson #irishpunk #irishnewwave #ripoffrecords #georgedoherty #nosweatband #goodvibrations #goodvibrationsrecords #theundertones #recordsleeve #belfastpunk #emeraldmusic #theoutcast

Elvis Costello - Radio Radio - Mini poster Radar Records UK 1978. 📻 Radio Radio b/w Tiny Steps (ADA 24) one of many superb non-album singles by Costello. "Radio Radio" originated as a song titled "Radio Soul", which Costello had written in 1974 as a member of the pub rock band Flip City. Provoked by the BBC's attempted censorship of the Sex Pistols' song, "God Save the Queen", Costello revived "Radio Soul" as "Radio Radio", a more cynical critique of the commercialization of English radio. Recorded either during the sessions for ”This Year's Model” or slightly afterwards. Antoinette Sales designed the UK single in Pic 2-5. #elviscostello #elviscostelloandtheattractions #radarrecords #radioradio #barneybubbles #barneybubblesestate #vinylsingles

Bob McGraths encyclopedic exploration of independent soulful record labels.📚 4 faboulos volumes with more than 2400 pages of recordlabels and several 100 000’s 45’s. Each volume is heavy, about the size of our old telephone books. Our opinion is that you don’t have to be a fanatic completist to own these fine books, but on the other hand they might be too much for the avarage soul buyer. However, invaluable source if you are collecting soul and rythm & blues 45’s, especially If you are curios about label details as well. Discogs discographies are good fingerpointers but they are as we all know not 100%. Added value is a guide that list the 7” US pressing plants and ofcourse our Bob has included state abreviations as well. #bobmcgrath #soul45 #soul45rpm #collectingrecords #45rpm #45rpmrecords #45rpmmusic #recordlabel #recordlabelowner #7inch #7inchvinyl #7inchsingle #7inchsaturday #collectorsedition #encyclopedia #blues45 #7inchrecords

The Count Bishops - 1975 poster 🎱Chiswick Records. Photo - Michael Beal. The Bishops arrived during the interregnum between Dr Feelgood and full-blown punk. A rowdy "deep rock" outfit, they combined an Anglophile taste on American music They were Chiswick Records first band back in 1975, before punk rock was invented and independent record labels were still few. This “Speedball” vinyl EP was the debut. Great band and equally great was their singer Mike Spencers The Cannibals. In pics - Speedball EP plus well worth looking for singles from Mike Spencers The Cannibals. #thecannibals #thecountbishops #pubrock #mikespencer #drfeelgoodband #chiswickrecords #45rpm
