Hey from the pit! I’m Lysistrata Karch-Coar, an LA-based designer/illustrator taking over the shoegram this week.

My illustration practice has been pocket-sized lately, so I’ll kick things off with some of my sketches from live music events this year.

Drawing in the dark, jostled by the crowd and awash in noise has become one of my favorite ways to be present documenting an experience and combatting perfectionism.

And, what was that? Don’t forget earplugs.

These are usually just posted ephemerally to my stories, as I’m a reluctant sharer (I do, however, post a LOT on behalf of @angelsgateart — more on that later).

Okay hello 👋

Three strikingly different shows this week, all with beautiful people! I’m done at Calarts and feeling inspired and energized. I want to play music so hit me up, let’s create something together ❤️‍🔥

Tonight: Floating Door, May edition! Really proud with how this series has shaped up🫡 been looking forward to this collaboration with Jake Parker Scott and provide music for his reel-to-reel film projections. Kourtney Jackson-Smith providing text as well! Matt Robidioux is here from the great wild north, Martin Escalante will serenade with the sax, and Casey Anderson will charm with electronics as well. Btw we are looking for more performance projects (of any kind) that aren’t centered on music. So if you have ideas, please dm!

Tomorrow: a real wild-card with LA outsider legend Let’s Paint TV (John Kilduff). This is at 2220 with some of my first LA friends deathflavorkiss, and Elder Sister who I love as well. Thanks John Dawson for making this happen. This one will be me in rare form 💪

And finally, Wednesday: a classic beloved crew will travel up to Ojai to present some original music by Jakob Heinemann. We will also improvise! Thanks Rob Magill for the support.

John Killduff (letspainttv)/Adam Lion Duo

The first meeting between John Kilduff (letspainttv) and Adam Lion (vibraphone). John, is an outsider legend who began on public access television 25 years ago. He embraces the absurd through performance of music, food, ping-pong, painting, and treadmills. Adam is a classically trained improviser of experimental music who has developed an idiosyncratic practice deeply focused on vibraphone. In this performance these backgrounds blend (or clash!) through spontaneous music.

Elder Sister

Elder Sister is the materialisation of incantations voiced from the marrow of broken bones, human DNA, ancestral imprints, whispers from other dimensions, and future triumphs, channeled through unpredictable songs of delayed guitars, vocal loops, and collected transmissions of everyday sounds.

Elder Sister is Jane Paik who persists as an artist, musician and healer for creatives, mystics and misfits. A wanderer by nature and forever situated in duality.

A dig into the past will unearth the Janet Pants Dans Theeatre, a pioneering experimental dance troupe that booked and toured like a band in the independent music scenes of the 90s/2000s. An easy stroll across the way will reveal the flip side of Elder Sister as the vocalist in the art-damaged, no wave, folk band Muscle Beach.

DeathFlavorKiss

DeathFlavorKiss is Melissa Achten and Eli Klausner, two composers, improvisers, and multi-instrumentalists. Their decade-long collaboration combines esoteric objects and hand-built instruments with their experimental harp and piano practice. They’ve performed and premiered compositions in New York, Montréal, London, and Cyprus. DeathFlavorKiss develops work out of their home studio Oracle Egg, which is also an experimental arts incubator that they run together.
