FORMS OF MIXTURE — CORE I FACULTY SYMPOSIUM #01
We are excited to launch the first of three Core I Faculty Symposia at Columbia GSAPP, bringing together diverse architectural practices, perspectives, and approaches to design.
For our first session, we welcome Daryan Knoblauch, founder of the Berlin-based architecture practice @daryanknoblauch , and Lorenzo Perri, co-founder of @_lemonot , an architecture and spatial practice based between London and Italy.
While Daryan’s work explores architecture as a spatial apparatus for cultural, social, and environmental forces, Lorenzo’s practice investigates the intersections of architecture, performance, and everyday life through experimental forms of collective engagement and place-making.
The conversation will be joined by Emma Sumrow, founder of @studiosmrw , who will offer a response and open the discussion to the audience.
Friday, October 16 | 4:30–6:30 PM
Wood Auditorium | Columbia GSAPP
Open to all students, faculty, and the broader community. Come join the conversation

Conclusion of our first brief: architecture with… CINEMA. Monia and Jack’ groups measured space in seconds by replicating scenes from films in the AA.
Here replicas of clips from La Haine, Enter the Void, Goodfellas, Playtime and storyboards of other films. Thanks to our crits Daniel Owusu, Sabrina Morreale @_lemonot , Barbara Campbell-Lange, Joel Newman. And in AA thanks to @catering_aa_school @theaalibrary, audiovisual Tom Parkes, maintenance and security team, and all the appearances.

Architecture at the Edge Film Workshop
18th-25th September 2026
Led by lemonot (Sabrina Morreale and Lorenzo Perri)
@_lemonot

The Irish phrase Le Chéile—”together” or “with one another”—invites us to reconsider
architecture not as the production of isolated objects, but as the cultivation of relationships. It calls for an understanding of the built environment as a shared ecology, where humans, non-humans, infrastructures, landscapes, memories, and everyday practices continuously shape one another.

Conviviality entails multiple ways of being in space. How can film help us explore how being within particular sites can shape an occupant’s being as a person? This year, we explored the concept of belonging - not as an abstract concept, but something cultivated through inhabiting, experiencing, and negotiating space, and is influenced by different degrees of spatial complexity.

Urban spaces do not necessarily facilitate expression or lived difference. They often operate as fast spaces “of transit”, characterised by limited contact between strangers.

How do we create places where diverse forms of life can encounter one another, participate, and belong?

Our project engages with micropublics that require ongoing interaction and communication, fostering mutual knowledge and familiarity through repeated patterns of behaviour. Through this process, 10 short films have been developed from these encounters and explorations, each offering a distinct cinematic investigation of how conviviality is produced, experienced, and negotiated within particular spaces.

Together, these short films examine the relationship between spatial conditions and lived experience, allowing us to encounter unexpected micropublics between private and public spheres, while also considering how new forms of convivial space might be created. Rather than treating film simply as a means of documenting these environments, the project uses filmmaking as a way of inhabiting, observing, and interpreting them—creating a collection of perspectives through which the complexities of belonging, difference, familiarity, and co-presence can be explored.

ADS7 Fieldtrip in Bangkok @bangkok_kunsthalle

Originally a printing house, divided into three buildings that have since been unified—it was severely damaged
by a fire in 2001 and remained abandoned for 23 years.. we have entered the world of the Kunsthalle with @stefano_rabolli_pansera and its artistic vision.

The Live Project unfolded as a short, intense artist residency: it focused on the journey between Bangkok and @khaoyai_art_forest - two venues - both vehicles of the same institution - experimenting with alternative approaches to site-specificity, through new notions of dwelling, rewilding and domestication.

The English Magistretti was curated together with @_lemonot and Margherita Pellino of the Magistretti Foundation, adapted to the spaces of the RCA's Hockney Gallery in Kensington.

The exhibition remembers and documents a planning and cultural «love story» which goes well beyond Vico’s known role as visiting professor in 1979 at the RCA: from the participation in 1952 in the Italian Contemporary Architecture show at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in London to many projects which have adopted English form and material (from the Caori table of 1969 to the Raffles sofa of 1988). The exhibition will show drawings, photographs, a splendid BBC1 video and archival documents.

Vico started teaching as Visiting Professor in Furniture Design at the RCA in 1979, was appointed Honorary Professor in 1990 and was named Senior Fellow of the RCA in 1996.

We had the opportunity to speak with several of Magistretti's former students, who took us back to the vibrant and formative years they spent studying with him. Through these long conversations, one thing became unmistakably clear: Vico's teaching was rooted above all in his presence. Rather than simply transmitting knowledge, he offered a way of seeing—a way of observing, interpreting, and giving meaning to details, and ultimately transforming ideas into tangible forms.

We had the pleasure of having with us Paul Chamberlain - Professor of Inclusive Design and Co-chair of the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design joining in conversation at the IIC London on the 8th of July, discussing how his studying with Vico influenced his practice and reflecting on Vico's ability to connect students with Milan's manufacturers and fabricators, it becomes clear that his approach extended far beyond the educational environment. By facilitating direct relationships with industry, he enabled students to understand how their designs could be produced while also opening opportunities for commissioned work during their time at school. This bridge between education and professional practice allowed students to develop not only as designers but also as practitioners engaged with the realities of production.

🌟 Il Magistretti inglese

9 – 18 July at the Hockney Gallery, Royal College of Art, Kensington Gore, London SW7 2EU

Private view Thursday 9 July, 4 to 8pm

ICI London supports Il Magistretti inglese, an exhibition that explores the relationship between Vico Magistretti and the United Kingdom through projects, correspondence, collaborations, conferences, awards and recognitions, as well as through the work and recollections of his students at the Royal College of Art in London.

The exhibition tells a story of a design and cultural affinity, almost a “love story” – drawing on letters, sketches, photographs, and notes mostly from the Studio Magistretti Archive – that goes far beyond Vico’s well-known role as visiting professor at the Royal College of Art in 1979.

A love story that starts in the 1950s with Magistretti’s participation in the Italian Contemporary Architecture show at the Royal Institute of British Architects in London and which goes on to include many projects inspired by English forms and materials, from the Caori table in 1969 to the Raffles armchair in 1988.

Also noteworthy are the trip for the 12th Triennale to visit the English prefabricated Model Schools and the traces of the conferences held in London, Glasgow and Belfast. The show also extends to little-known architectural projects in Leeds and West Yorkshire.

A project developed through the collaboration between the Italian Cultural Institute in London, Fondazione Vico Magistretti, and Royal College of Art, with the support of Gruppo Censeo

Thank you all for your generosity, openness, thoughtfulness, and the energy you brought to our discussion. Your willingness to share your perspectives so candidly made for a rich and genuinely valuable conversation.

We spent the whole day inside an air conditioned auditorium, I have to admit that by the end of it all, I was slightly envious of the pigeons happily splashing around in the water feature 💦

We have delighted to have one more speaker to announce and are very happy to introduce Sabrina Morreale from Lemonot (@_lemonot)! Lemonot is a duo composed of Sabrina Morreale and Lorenzo Perri who blend spatial and relational practices. They operate between architecture and performative arts, using them as tools to detect, celebrate and trigger the spontaneous theatre of everyday life. They currently teach at the AA and at the RCA in London: their academic research focuses on contemporary forms of conviviality – as a trigger for unconventional spatial languages.
