I finally tried making a music video and here’s the thing I did: 𝓈𝓂𝒶𝓁𝓁𝑒𝓇 𝑔𝒶𝓇𝒹𝑒𝓃𝓈 I like to record videos of everyday things and reimagine them as alien terrain 👽 Big thanks to Keefe Jackson for playing bass clarinet and to master percussionist @dylino_ryno for contributing some meditative vibraphone that sends me to the stratosphere with every listen ✨✨ Enjoy the full video on @a.single.ocean’s YouTube channel or stream the song wherever you prefer 🚁 Our new record is available on Bandcamp: https://asingleocean.bandcamp.com/album/a-single-ocean #ASingleOcean #ScottMcGaughey #CameronBrand #ChristopherSchreck #KeefeJackson #DylanRyan #EtherFeather

“This month, we attack the backlog with reviews of digitally generated guitar music, Antipodean soul, South Korean car horn improvisations and that totally banging Lifeguard LP. “ A new dust. https://dustedmagazine.tumblr.com/post/786896018705956864/dust-volume-11-number-six

Hi! About 5 years ago I released an album called You Don’t Need a Key To Leave 🔑 That album happened finally because of Cameron Brand and Chris Schreck. The 3 of us started recording brand new songs back in 2019 or so and we’re finally releasing some of it ⏳ Our first @a.single.ocean LP comes out this Friday May 2. Preorders are shipping this week. Check it out!👂 There’s a shitton of synths, percussion of all stripes, bizarro vocals, sundry implements out the ying-yang, field recordings, gum chewy electric bass, raven squawks, lead vocals by a toddler, Dylan Ryan on vibraphone, xylophone and handclaps & Keefe Jackson on bass clarinet and sax 🎷 🫁 👂 Brilliant mix by Cam 👂 Layout expertise by @chriskaylis 🙏 Cover art by @travess 💎 https://asingleocean.bandcamp.com/album/a-single-ocean @cdschreck @a_clangor @dylino_ryno #keefejackson #asingleocean #christopherschreck #cameronbrand #scottmcgaughey #synth #chicagomusic #organicelectronic #dankpatiohang #shmeerecords #diy #music #openmind #johnwetton

Prior to A Single Ocean, we formally began working as a trio back in 2018, when we collaborated on the recording and overdubbing sessions for @wwatermark’s 2020 solo release, “You Don’t Need A Key To Leave.” After completing that album, we decided to turn our focus to new material, with “Fastening/Gathering” emerging as the first track developed for our new project. In many ways, the recording of “F/G” would set the tone for how our music as ASO comes together, with songs finding their form through an interwoven process of improvisation, layering, and collage-minded editing. Here, we began with a voice memo of Scott playing a dreamy ad-libbed sequence on piano, to which we added an array of disparate elements: prog-friendly electric bass; several layers of modular synthesizer; slowed recordings of a recorder; a deeply manipulated audio clip from Alan Clarke’s 1989 film “Elephant”; and pieces of Tupperware from Cameron’s kitchen, which we used to create a basic percussion track (thus leading to the song’s working title, “Tablaware”). Those elements were then altered, dissected, and stitched together to build a cohesive composition – but the song didn’t truly find its voice until we sent the file to our dear friend Dylan Ryan (@dylino_ryno, with whom we’ve played in ensembles like Icy Demons and @bronzetheband), who overdubbed layers of vibraphone from his studio in LA. Upon hearing his contribution, we were inspired to add an outro that completed the track, with an isolated portion of Dyl’s vibes set upon a bed of droning modular, subtle synth bass, shuffling hand drums, and reverbed shakers made from llama’s hooves. The music video for “DVD Menu” is out in the world today 🌐 Here’s a little write-up on how it came together. Link to view the full video is up in my linktree and stories. … “DVD Menu” started with a MiniDisc ‘field recording’ daydream half-asleep hummer at a piano and grew into a globular tentacled modular synth beast thanks to Cameron Brand. Cameron and Scott then added some slippery Kindergarten Woodwind Watercolors and Christopher Schreck dreamed up the blissed out slo-mo synth lasso that wraps the song up as it all slowly fades underwater. In the video created by Lisa Armstrong and Dariia Zamrii, perspectives shift between macro and micro views. Time fast forwards and moves in reverse. Pieces are cut from and drawn onto the fabric of time by some unknown creator. We see an insect move from the gelatinous larva stage to becoming one with its bee kingdom. Vocalized humming buzzes to the rapid movement of insects. The video combines archival footage from Public Domain, combined with atmospheric videos filmed by the artists. Animations were also hand-drawn as well as screen-recorded, then stitched into the video like fragments of memories. As we zoom out, the insects become an obscure mass of static noise. Is the individual greater than the sum of its parts or is it the inverse? Is it a distant memory or a fever dream? Are we watching a DVD or did we ever leave the menu? Music by Scott McGaughey Designed, Edited, and Animated by Lisa Armstrong and Dariia Zamrii
