POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

When Unspoken Stories was finally published, I braced myself.

It felt so vulnerable to put so much of myself out into the world - so risky to put on the page the preciousness of Owen and Cassie and all that they had changed in me.

However, it feels like the stories have landed in ways that have gone beyond all I could have hoped or imagined - and so one of my deep and unexpected joys has been the emails and reviews like this one.

"I read "Unspoken Stories" in one sitting: it is at once magnificent…tragic…beautiful…heart rending…eye-opening…brutally honest… It is a must-read for everyone who works with, or has, children with intellectual disabilities who are non-speaking. Well, actually, for all of us. It was so moving reading Owen's and Cassie's stories, seeing surely only a tiny snapshot of their struggles, their feelings, their emotions, all that they would have others know and understand of themselves.

Beverly’s honesty and openness about her own feelings, even as she endeavours to understand those of Cassie and Owen, to hear what they have to tell her, invite the reader in to her story as well as theirs.

“Unspoken Stories” is beautifully written with understanding, humility and compassion."

Thank you for all the responses so far. I am storing them in my heart.

Remember when @actionspace artist and Wandsworth resident Nnena Kalu became the first learning-disabled artist to win the @turnerprizeofficial ? What an incredible moment for Wandsworth, that one of our own won the biggest UK prize in contemporary art, and during our year as London Borough of Culture too. 🥹

Introducing Maddi Lingard @maddilingard - one of our current #SyncingSpace residents @SyncThinking who has studio space and support @venturearts in Manchester.

Over the past few weeks Maddi has let us into her world and the joy she finds in capturing her memories of family and friends and her interest in fashion. She’s currently exploring the moon as metaphor, less fierce than the sun, gentle in its ebb and flow. Sometimes shining bright and sometimes hardly there for us to see. Kindness is a value that Maddi aspires to which is evident in the work she makes and her gentle reflection in her studio postings.

Go to syncingspace.org and check it out.
With thanks to our partners and supporters for this residency @art.dis.singapore @VentureArts @RocketArtists @DASH @actionspace and our creative supporters who make it all possible and @acegrams who are supporting Syncing Space so that artists with learning disability and autism can find and define their leadership for the road ahead and see themselves as internationally relevant with something (as Maddi would say) ‘to ‘show the world’.

We’re deep into our 4th online #SyncingSpace international residency @syncthinking for artists with learning disability and autism to find and define their arts leadership.

This week and next we’re going to focus on our 4 brilliant artists in residence but firstly throwing light on our first ‘in studio’ session exploring choice of colour as it relates to who we are as artists and how we lead, facilitated by co-programme leader, the wonderful, Thompson Hall and @tanyasartstudios. Go to www.syncingspace.org and if you have a life in colour and a learning disability or autism you can upload your colour experiments too.

@aceagrams funded, this residency is made all the better working with our brilliant team @annilim @coldharvcash @sheep_films and Oli Pyle.

Big shout out to our partners and supporters: @art.dis.singapore @venturearts @actionspace @rocket_artists @dashdisabilityarts and our creative supporters who make it all happen.

gosh! an epic day out with sister brett on wednesday! we sure packed a lot in! got the bus to bloomsbury to meet the wonderful people at #actionspace working out of the wonderful resource that is #cockpitstudios ....sister brett had worked with the delightful #sheryllcatto at the British Crafts Council decades ago so they reminisced about old times which was lovely:) more about this organization soon over on #skyestyelimit_insta
Then off to the retail / cafe district a few streets away which saw us observing a beautiful casket for a beloved father/grandfather going off to its resting place, So beautiful. The perfume shop and the cake shops oh and the stationery store all took our breaths away quite frankly! beautiful, detailed design eye was apparent everywhere. Bought sis a carousel of gorgeous perfumes, of which I immediately claimed 4:) as you do! there were the most astounding wax crayons made in egg molds and gorgeous cameo-brooch style soaps :) HAD to get some of these. Then onto #notjustashop where the innovative work of UAL design students is sold. WOW! this is so very London for me... :) then of course we had to visit the unbelievable sir john soane museum (just go!!! OMG!) with the truly amazing exhibition (upstair) of Madeline Vriesendorp ... I could live in here:) WOW! then back home to brett's at Finsbury Park for a VERY big bath, rather large gin and tonic and an epic lie down befitting an EPIC DAY ON EARTH!!

My talented sister Skye @quirky_way who trained as an art therapist is in London on the first leg of a 5 week research trip across Europe & North America to examine alternative models for providing provision within this field. We both v much enjoyed meeting yesterday Sheryl Catto CEO of the amazing @actionspace which supports artists with learning difficulties by offering mentoring, studio space & support they need to thrive and grow ! The energy in their workshops was truly extraordinary and a testament to what they achieve across their 3 London studio locations -@studiovoltaire @cockpitstudios and Brent.

Wonderful for me to discover that Sheryl and I worked together in the 90s when she was CEO of @craftscouncil touring their craft exhibitions through the overseas network of @Britishcouncil. She’s not lost any of her infectious enthusiasm for the arts nor her professionalism now she’s artistic director of @actionspace

We then went onto visit one of their artists Thompson Hall @thebombfactoryartfoundation windows in Kingsway. This charity which also provides space (using “meanwhile” offices/buildings) to provide affordable studio & exhibitions space for artists (in return for which artists share their skills thru workshops & learning programs). Very proud of my ex @thephotographersgallery colleague @fpintoart who is the inspiring Chair of this organisation and also Andrew Gault who is currently consulting for the charity.

When I learnt that Skye had never been to @soanemuseum we had no option but to join the queue and visit (after some much need refreshment and retail therapy in Lams conduit street most especially the exquisite @pentreathandhall

We both loved the temporary exhibition @soanemuseum by the Dutch artist/illustrator (of many @newyorkermag covers!) @madalon_vriesendorp b 1945 whose subversive work across all media ( including #mindgames ) provides a surrealist lens on the world. Like Soane she was an avid collector arranging her objects with humour & artistry in her Dutch studio- she’s been embraced by architects for her ability to express complex architectural ideas clearly thru objects/etchings/jewellery. A truly unique artist this is a sma
