“And every year when the moon is the biggest and brightest, I can see my family down on earth. And we are still together even though we must be apart.” 🌕🏮🥮Songs of the Moon: Fantastical Folk Tales from Asia, February-March 2025, with 5th Ave’s Educational Touring Company. Written by @ggthunderturtles with music by @annastasiaworkman

After a month of rehearsals, we performed 85 shows in two months (9-13 shows per week) for roughly ~21,000 students all around Washington state. I’d never been in such a physically demanding process, and I’ve never been asked to be up so early, but I wouldn’t have made it out without the incredibly talented and hard working cast and crew. (The cast had a minimum of 4 characters for each track, and we did in fact build and tear down the set for any new location to perform!!)

There was a point in the post show Q&As where we started introducing ourselves with our ethnicity and nationalities, as an opportunity to educate students on the broad range of Asian American experience, and to expand on the fact that we were cast to play nationalities that differed from our own. It was not lost on me how most of these students had never seen a theatrical performance, let alone seen working professional actors of Asian descent perform. I’ll always remember when the kids faces would light up when they recognized the folk tales or identified with where the story came from. Especially in the current political climate, it was deeply moving to get to perform an unapologetically Asian show, with an undeniably diverse Asian cast, and to get to declare that I am a “proud daughter of Vietnamese refugees.”

Happy Mid-Autumn festival to all who celebrate! Hug your family and friends, and even if you can’t, know that they feel your love when you look up at the moon!
