What’s the most beautiful thing you’ve ever experienced? Not a person, not an achievement.

The moments that stick with us like this are usually the ones that shaped who we are. Questions like this one come from briidge cards, and they’re designed to take a conversation somewhere it wouldn’t go on its own.

Because at briidge, we believe that’s where stronger relationships start. Understanding yourself a little better, then having those deeper conversations with the people around you.

Last weekend at Toronto Sauna Fest, we went around asking people exactly that. So, what’s your answer? 👇

The dinner table wasn’t just sentimental.

It was the system that kept families connected.

Every night, people were in the same place at the same time. Conversations happened naturally. “How was your day?” “What’s been on your mind?”

Nobody designed it that way. The structure created the connection.

And when that disappeared, nothing replaced it.

Now most families communicate through logistics. Group chats. Birthday reminders. “Let me know when you’re free.”

Technically connected. Functionally distant.

For the first time, staying close to your family has to be built intentionally.

That’s why we’re building @briidge.app

Nostalgia isn’t just sentiment.

It’s your brain trying to reconnect you.

Researchers found when people feel lonely, they naturally turn to old memories — photos, moments, people.

And it actually works.

It increases feelings of connection, meaning, and self-worth.

Not just remembering the past.

A built-in way to counter loneliness.

So when you catch yourself going back to old memories…

That’s not weakness.

It’s your brain trying to bring you closer again.

Relationships don’t fail because of one big moment.

It’s the small ones people miss.

Researchers studied couples and tracked tiny interactions — what they called “bids for connection.”

A comment. A question. A glance.

Something as simple as “how was your day?”

Couples who stayed together responded to these bids most of the time.

That’s what actually predicts whether a relationship lasts.

After almost every conversation, you think it went worse than it did.

You replay what you said. The awkward moments. The things you wish you said differently.

But the other person usually doesn’t see it that way.

Researchers found people consistently underestimate how much they’re liked after conversations — even with roommates months later.

We’re just harsher on ourselves than anyone else is.

So the conversation you thought went badly… probably didn’t.

People avoid talking to strangers because they think it’ll be awkward. Uncomfortable. Not worth it.

Researchers from the University of Chicago put this to the test. They asked commuters to talk to a stranger on the train. Another group stayed silent. A third did whatever they normally do.

Beforehand, everyone predicted the same thing: silence would be better.

They were wrong.

The people who talked were happier. The people they spoke to were happier. We keep choosing isolation because we think connection will be awkward. But that prediction is wrong — almost every time.

Your parents aren't just "mom" and "dad." They're entire worlds. Decades of memories you've never heard. Fears they've never named. Hopes they quietly let go of.

You'll never fully know them. But you can always know them more.

We assume people don't really want to hear about it. UC Berkeley proved us wrong.

They studied what happens when people have shallow conversations vs. deep ones. Before - most people chose shallow. They expected the deep ones to be awkward.

After? Every single time, the deep conversations went better than expected. And the preference completely flipped.
The thing people underestimated most? How much the other person actually wanted to connect.

Next time someone asks how you're doing - tell them for real. They're more ready for it than you think.

I've been thinking a lot lately about what actually keeps us close to the people we love. Not the group chat where we coordinate logistics. Not the occasional "thinking of you" text. The real stuff. The connective tissue.

I've been researching this obsessively (occupational hazard), and there's this distinction that keeps coming up: Contact vs. Connection. Contact is easy. It's the birthday message, the holiday FaceTime. Connection is harder. It's the rituals. The small, repeated things that say: I'm still here, you're still part of my life.

And honestly? I'm not great at this. Especially now that everyone's scattered. Different cities, different time zones, different lives. There's no manual for how to stay woven into your parents' world, or your siblings', when you're no longer physically in it.

So I'm asking, genuinely: What are you actually doing to stay close?

Not the Instagram-worthy stuff. The real things. The habit you do with your mom every Sunday. The voice notes you send to your brother. The annual trip home that's non-negotiable. Even the tiny stuff. The specific question you always ask your dad. The way you check in with your sister.

I want to learn from you. What actually works? What's anchoring you to your family when distance makes it easy to drift?

Your family group chat is working exactly as designed. That's the problem. New piece on why the tools we use to stay close might be keeping us at the surface.

Second piece in the Beneath the Surface series. We're looking at something most of us don't notice: how intentional we've become about everything in our lives, and how unintentional we still are about the people in them.

Before we talk about what we’re building, we wanted to write about what we keep noticing. In our own families, in conversations with friends, in the research. A series of pieces on the thinking behind Bridge. This is where it starts.
