Edges
Arrigo Arrighetti’s canopy for Amendola metro station, Milan (1961).
Paper model, 25 × 25 cm.

My model is on show in Insegnare lo spazio / Teaching Space at @polimi, from the History and Theory of Contemporary Architecture course with Prof. Luka Skansi, Susanna Campeotto and Francesco Maranelli.

From the hexagonal canopy over the M1 entrance, I isolated one theme: the edge. Each one is a steel beam carrying two inclined plates in a shallow V, where structure, light and ornament meet.

Have you ever noticed it in Piazza Amendola?

Located near Porto, next to the former Companhia Cerâmica das Devesas, the project reinterprets the site's ceramic heritage through a centre for tile production, research and conservation. Digital fabrication, wet processing, glazing, painting, diagnosis and restoration are combined with a public co-working café, bringing visitors into direct contact with the tile-making process.

The architecture translates the transformation of clay into two contrasting volumes: a fluid, light clay-plastered building recalls the plasticity of unfired clay, while an orthogonal glazed volume wrapped in a rotating terracotta tile screen represents its fired state.

The tile facade is composed of perforated double-colour tiles. They are supported by hollow SHS beams integrated with the glass framework. Flanged bushing allows tile rotation about the metal rod, which enables control of sunlight into space.

Rooted in traditional Japanese ways of living and design, the "Town-in-Town" integrates elements such as the 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘴𝘶, 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘬𝘢𝘯, and 𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘢𝘸𝘢 within a contemporary framework. Accommodating two apartments and a co-working space, the project reflects values of simplicity, the beauty of imperfection, and everyday rituals.

The building is conceived with a dry-wall structural system. A clear distinction between public and private functions is expressed through materiality: the ground floor, clad in concrete panels, hosts an accessible co-working space, while the upper floors, defined by wooden panels and posts, contain two private apartments. A shared 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘴𝘶 serves as a point of encounter between the residents.

The site is structured by a system of shallow water ponds that encourage a direct relationship between people and water, enhancing the contemplative atmosphere of the project. The spatial concept follows a vertical gradation: from the grounded, heavy concrete base, through the lighter wooden volumes above, and culminating in a roof that appears to gently hover, like a leaf.

Now I am an architect - a small important person.
The first step, the first experience, the first discipline… and it’s forever! I want to make this world better, our cities better, the lives of many people better.

Over these years, my love for architecture has grown incredibly strong, and I think I agree with words “there is no art form more emotionally charged than architecture.”

The next stage for me will be a Master’s degree, with a grand research project already on my mind - one deeply connected to my country.

I am endlessly grateful to my parents and family who stood by me, and to my friends and colleagues who always helped and inspired me.

Laurea !!! 🍀
