Today, the incredible, multi-award-winning Patrice Lawrence was announced as the new #ChildrensLaureate. @lawrencepatrice is one of the most passionate, talented people I have ever met, so supportive in her role as one of the @allstorieswrite patrons and so inspirational as both an author and a driver of change.

I have no doubt how instrumental and important Patrice's tenure as laureate will be, particularly at a time when society has never felt so fragmented and the future so uncertain, with her focus on promoting wellbeing, connection and communities through sharing stories.

In Patrice's own words:

"I know that stories enable isolated children and young people to feel seen, understood, and most importantly, valued. Stories help readers explore unfamiliar subjects safely with space to pause and reflect on complex emotions. And, just as importantly, reading helps us to understand each other's stories. I believe that sharing our stories will help us build strong communities for everyone across the UK."

Huge congratulations, Patrice 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Congratulations to Patrice Lawrence @lawrencepatrice on being named the new Waterstones Children’s Laureate! Having taught and talked alongside Patrice on several occasions, I think she’s the perfect person for this role at this moment. She believes in the power of stories, teaches, mentors, and champions other writers and literary organisations. She inspires readers with her books and wonderfully open and generous author talks. I’m so excited to see what she’ll do with this platform.

Alhamdulillah it's Friday.

My week has been filled with energy and creativity, thanks to the amazing folks at @allstorieswrite and @megaphonewriterscic, who hosted the phenomenal Sara Grant, for special workshops with All Stories and Megaphone mentees.

Sara took us through several exercises from her fantastic book, The Ultimate Guide to Editing Your Novel, which is jam-packed with practical tips and tools to interrogate our writing and develop and grow as novelists. Character, chapter or line, each exercise helped me discover a little bit more about my writing style and understand how I can make my words shine.

The workshops also helped me untangle a particular knot in my YA dystopia, but more importantly, Sara has helped me change my approach to editing, which I hope will help me continue to grow as a children's novelist.

I'm now looking forward to a weekend of intense revisions to prep my entry for @scbwi_british_isles Undiscovered Voices competition.

Big shout-out to Leila, @thisiscatherinecoe and team for all your work in making All Stories and Megaphone Writers the best place to be for underrepresented writers. You are superstars ✨️

This was such a fun session. It’s always lovely to meet new writers and I love imparting everything I’ve learned so they can hopefully go into writing more informed. So happy everyone found it helpful! Swipe for quotes and a photo of me and my dear friend @louminns ❤️

Posted @withregram • @allstorieswrite Our 10th workshop on writing for children was hosted by @a.m.dassu @sotlibraries Longton Library last Saturday!

The copy on the slide reads:

Longton Library Writing for Children workshop with A.M Dassu @a.m.dassu

‘Everything covered was absolutely amazing!’

‘It was helpful and friendly, which encourages people to participate’

‘Just a big thank you to all involved. I’ve come away feeling so inspired and ready to make changes in my own personal writing life.’

‘Honesty and encouragement from the host. Dealt with any questions easily and felt that was helpful’

‘I enjoyed every moment of the session. It gave me a real insight into a world that I felt was not for people like me. I left feeling so inspired and hopeful.’

- workshop attendees

“What a lovely session – it was absolutely fantastic to welcome residents into Longton Library for an insightful, informative and incredibly enjoyable workshop.

Az was very knowledgeable and talked about topics that I don’t think have been covered in previous workshops I’ve attended – really getting down to some of the nitty gritty of what being an author can be like. There were some fantastic hints, tips and revelations, from working with agents, the editing process to when it’s best to submit a manuscript for consideration. It was a delight to welcome AM Dassu to Longton Library and to host this workshop which we heartily hope will lead to an active writing group.“ - Amy Capewell, Librarian, Longton Library

“I remember what it felt like when starting out, trying to figure out the publishing process, so I shared everything I’ve learned in over a decade; from the importance of a good agent, the publication process, the vital pitch, editing, promotion, genres and word counts. I wanted attendees to leave feeling empowered and ready to take the next step in their writing journeys.” A. M. Dassu

In her first fabulous February Showcase Vrushali Khadilkar shares the love – in particular around celebrating Children’s Authors and illustrators week. Along with some wonderful excerpts from All Stories mentees Taslin Pollock and Hayley Griffin, we have a piece from Gita Ralleigh best selling The Voyages of Sam Sing. On a different note, we meet Sunderland Maker and creator Ellie Clewlow , who repurposes old books to make beautiful art!
Says Vrushali:
“I will be reflecting on human relationships as a whole: how we connect and how our creativity helps us to do so.”https://pentoprint.org/showcase-when-hero-falls-understanding-textilis-yoch-voyage-sam-singh/

Would you like to discover the work of 21 emerging children’s book writers from the All Stories @allstorieswrite and Megaphone Writers CIC @megaphonewriterscic mentoring schemes?

Our Meet the Mentees e-booklet showcases the work of our talented mentees who attended the #MeettheMentee event – writing for the whole range of readerships, from picture books up to young adult.

These mentees are currently unagented, but probably not for long! DM us with your email address if you’d like a copy dropped into your inbox.

“Our #MeettheMentee event brought industry professionals together with All Stories and Megaphone mentees to introduce their work and initiate relationships – part of our vital work as we keep pushing to improve diversity in the industry. The room was full of positivity and people committed to the same cause, but as CLPE’s latest Reflecting Realities report highlighted, publishing has to do so much better when it comes to representation and inclusion. The news on Friday that the percentage of children’s books with racially minoritised main characters has greatly reduced (to just 7%) is incredibly disappointing, and only shows how important it is to continue supporting and championing writers from underrepresented backgrounds.” - @thisiscatherinecoe

“Megaphone Writers CIC is deeply concerned by the drop in racially-minoritized representation in children’s books revealed by CLPE Reflecting Realities 2024. Young people in the UK are increasingly from diverse, global heritages, and all children deserve to see the world they live in faithfully reflected in books, and to see themselves as potential authors of their own stories. This is how we build readers and writers for the future. There’s no absence of talented children’s writers of colour; many of them part of Megaphone Community.
Our current mentees – who have gone through a transformative development year as they write their first novel – are featured in the Meet the Mentee e-booklet.” Leila Rasheed, @megaphonewriterscic
