Some thoughts that I’ve been sharing in classes came to mind during a pre-class warm up with @amandaleelive attempting to manifest the magic of OP and Ray Brown, presented here, in the moment, no edits or retakes

So much fun bridging jazz across art forms (music and dance), between music genres (traditional folk and jazz), reimagining the foreign with the local (rewriting jazz standard tunes into our SG context), and bringing jazz to unlikely communities.

Thanks to @nacsingapore @heartbeat_bedok @southeastcdc for the opportunity to share jazz music and dance in the heartlands!

First time running a solo on this tune. It can be liberating to really explore the music without thinking of singing or playing for dancers. Thanks to @amandaleelive for the invite to sing as part of her Swingtet - what I call the bare bones edition, where there is no band or dance(ers) to hide behind. It was good fun but more importantly, it pushed me past my comfort zones. Learnt much working with these amazing musicians (with Leo Jeoh on t-bone) and long time collaborators, with Amanda refining some of my arrangements of the tunes for the sets as well here at the amazing venue at @maduro.sg

Anyone recognize the tune?

Happy 61st birthday Singapore. May we continue to work towards a democratic society, based on justice
and equality, so as to achieve happiness, prosperity
and progress for our nation (even as we continue to work on our art to strive to do it better justice).

The Amanda Lee Swingtet (bare bones edition!) @amandaleelive decided to end our set last night at @maduro.sg with a patriotic tune that speaks more of the role each one of us needs to play for success rather than dependence on anything else.

Happy 61st birthday Singapore! May we all continue to give our best for continued peace, progress, and prosperity.

I’ve always been drawn to presenting and doing things a little differently by bringing different elements together - sometimes more successful than others. But I am particularly pleased with this New Orleans 2nd line inspired arrangement of the traditional Hokkein tune 《愛拼才會贏》 (Ai Piah Cia Eh Yia), which translates as “To Win You, You Have to Strive”. It was also great fun to put together this tongue in cheek choreography that reminds us not to take things too seriously. Enjoy!

It has been an intense Jazz in July, with 4 Sunday Lindy Hop, Authentic Jazz, and Charleston workshops, and 2 Rhythmakers sets with the Jazz Inc team and students performances. But the process over 2 months of prep starting with the concept for the show, listening to the music and charting the arrangements for the band followed by reherasal, as well as choreographing and training the dance performers.

The thing that came to me most for the stage show was the idea of bridging things - the dance with the music, blurring the lines of performer and community, popular music with jazz. And from the reactions and feedback, I’m glad that people enjoyed them and were able to appreciate the things that I heard and seen in my mind’s eye and ears.

As always, all this is possible only with my stellar cast of musicians - Leo Jeoh, Amanda Lee, Raf Soundwalker, Nobu Shiraishi, and Issei Hidaaka - and dancers - Farizan Abubakar, Jeremy Hu, Gabriel Palazzi, Jasmine Lim, Sophia Tan, Lucia Lu, Tan Weiting. Nicola Ngiam, Philene Leow - who went along with my ideas, and Esplanade for giving the opportunity to present them.

Thank you @esplanadesingapore , for a month of Jazz in July. Thank you to all the musicians who shared their sounds and visions of this amazing artform that seeks individual voices to add to the whole.

But more importantly, my gratitude goes to my musicians and dancers who helped to bring my vision to life, to bridge different ideas and forms, and to translate what I see and feel so that others may. And to the festival for the platform to make it possible, and the audiences and participants (of the dance workshops) for it is for you also these are presented. The work is far from perfect, but it’s a step closer towards the goal, increating bridges, between forms, ideas, and people.

But for now -

After the curtain’s drawn
And the lights gone dim
After the applause is gone
And all the artistry seen

Begins the real work to be done

Unseen from prying eyes
In silence, the loneliness
The labour awash with sighs
Striving in steadfastness

The work that needs to be done

To the vision stay true
In the translation to you
This constant grind due
To make you see a-new

The work as yet to be done

Till the prize is won
Not when audiences fawn
But after the curtain’s drawn
Renewed, the vision’s dawn

Then still, more work yet to be done

One of my favorite events in Singapore is when the Lindy hop community gets together to dance with @jazzincsg while the @rhythmakers play at the Esplanade. So many friends, great dancers, and fun music.
And yes for me it's a big dance and draw event. This is one of the largest size sketch and watercolor piece that I have attempted.

Ok I’m a little late but I had a wonderful time in Ascona Switzerland with the Traveling Janes. We had a ball performing at the Jazz Ascona Festival and I hope we’ll be able to play there again in the future. #TravelingJanes #JazzAscona #WellDoneGirls #WinningTheJazz#
