Saying no to commissions and requests has been the hardest part of learning about who I am as a person and as an artist. It is incredibly difficult to hear someone’s passion for a project and how they really want to work with me and for me to be part of it and to then deny that proposal because it doesn’t match what I want to spend my time on, my passion and drive.

@amber_clay17 has been incredibly patient with all of my ups and downs in getting to this commission, this being the sketch of the first in a series of three. Over a year ago I took on several projects at once, over ambitiously. I had to refuse many of them but this one I really loved the idea of because it resonated so much with the direction that I want to take my illustration work into.

One thing I’m learning about myself is that I need to have that spark about a project from the start if it will have the energy to be carried through to the end.

I love painting but I also really love my illustrations. I am trying to find a way to mix the two as I feel like that is the direction that my work is meant for. My oil paintings have been an exploration in colour, medium and composition, while my illustrations and drawings have been exercises in human proportions, character design and perspective. The thing that excites me most right now is bringing everything together.

I’m really looking forward to taking this one onto the canvas and seeing what I can make of it!

Work in progress! Sketch done in procreate.
