Amélie Picher-Plante recently won silver at the IPF Open Classic World Championships in the 47kg class after finishing in 12th place in the 57kg class the year prior. Read below for how she made the cut to 47kg while maintaining (and increasing) her strength, and swipe for some advice she’d give to someone consider cutting a weight class (or two!).

1️⃣ We took a strategic approach to training, continuously adjusting volume, intensity, and loads based on recovery, performance, and how my body was responding throughout the cut.  Rather than forcing the weights to match my pre-cut strength levels, we focused on what my body could recover from in the moment.  I believe that approach helped me recover better, manage fatigue, and most importantly, stay injury-free throughout the process.
2️⃣ We increased daily energy expenditure by adding low-impact cardio sessions that wouldn’t interfere with recovery or performance - whether that was walking, biking, swimming, or even line dancing!  The goal was simply to move more, eat more and still create a sustainable deficit without adding unnecessary fatigue.  Ironically, I was eating more than ever throughout this entire process… while technically being in a cut.  That completely changed my perspective on what a successful weight cut can actually look like.
3️⃣We made everything outside of training a priority - sleep quality, hydration, meal timing around training, stress management, and overall recovery.  As body weight came down, recovery became even more important, so the small details couldn’t be overlooked anymore.  Making sure I was well-fuelled before training, recovering properly after sessions, staying hydrated, and protecting my sleep allowed me to keep training hard, maintain performance, and handle the demands of the cut without feeling constantly run down.
