The virgin sit! This kill wasn’t all that exciting. All the pieces of the puzzle had already come together through earlier hunts and reconnaissance with optics from a distance—old school, as they say. You won’t find this one on any topo maps. Terrain didn’t play a role. This buck was bedding in a big, flat CRP field riddled with cedars. He traveled through thick grass to immense agricultural fields of corn, beans, and alfalfa. Occasionally, he would also bed in the overgrown waterways between the corn. He had numerous scrapes along his travel route. Sometimes he’d work them on his way out to feed; other times, he’d walk right past without acknowledging them. It was a textbook September and early October feeding pattern. The early October moons had him entering his bed before sunrise, getting up at midday to mill around his bedding area, and waiting until slightly after dark to leave for the fields. With no major break in the weather and no excitement from rut activity, I was waiting for a favorable moon time to get him on his feet early. I got what I needed. That evening, he got up half an hour before sundown. From a strategically placed stand on the edge of the CRP, well away from his bed, I watched this old Iowa bruiser stand and survey his surroundings. Then, slowly and methodically, like a lumbering giant, he headed toward the fields for the night. He walked past numerous scrapes without giving them a second glance. He traveled in a straight, steady line for more than 100 yards, bringing him right past my stand tucked into a cedar with plenty of cover. He never stopped or looked around. At 20 yards, I put an arrowhead through both lungs. He went 40 yards and fell over, all on video. Number two was down for the count. I’d like to tell you I rattled or grunted him in or pulled off some major trick. Sometimes, a clean setup and a first sit are the key. This big boy was surgically removed. He never knew what hit him. - Andrae D’Acquisto Sponsored by momma Leisa cooking🙂 Hunt like a wolf 🐺 #lookatthecage #virginsit #bumpanddump #hangandhunt #surgicallyremoved

Everyone has their own way of chasing down mature whitetails with a bow. Over and over, we keep hearing how it cannot—or should not—be done on early October mornings. Time and time again, though, I keep punching my tags on some of my biggest bucks on those very mornings and passing on other opportunities. This one was no different. As a matter of fact, he was one of numerous bucks I saw strolling back to bed, eating acorns and freshening up sign along the way. It comes down to doing your homework, knowing what’s going on, and understanding how to access your spot so you can get in clean. Unfortunately for this buck, I was already set up in my Lone Wolf Custom Gear stand with my Hoyt AX3, ready for the shot. Andrae D’Acquisto #huntlikeawolf🐺
