Fallen Down Here Is A New Song I have been working on for the last three to four weeks. It’s a melancholic, bittersweet reflection on the past and what you, or I, could have done in our lives to make more out of it. The lyrics came to me when thinking about the year-and-a-half gap in High School where I, and a lot of other students had to go to high school through online classes thanks to COVID in 2020 to mid 2021. The music of Death Cab For Cutie was also a big influence. Hope you all enjoy it. #minnesotamusic #mankatomusic #midwestemo #slowcore #angstymusic

Getting to work with Justin Allen @justin_d_allen of Make Do Books @make.do.books was an extra special facet of making AN UNSPOKEN LANGUAGE. Justin and I have been co-workers, colleagues, and friends for 10+ years and it has so been great to see him grow as an artist and a book designer. Justin brought his avid love of all things photo book + attention to book design detail to this project. We had several ideation sessions, including looking at piles of books and figuring out what we did and didn’t want in this project. The finished edit, sequence, and material choices all reflect that! The tactile nature of the cover really sets the tone as you start turning the pages and start exploring the book. An Unspoken Language is the culmination of more than a decade of photographic portraiture, research, and exhibitions. In collaboration with editor Bartholomew Ryan @bartholomewryan and designer Justin Allen of Make Do Books, we developed a book that reflects the depth and evolution of this work. Essays by AK Garski @oppositional_gays and Bartholomew Ryan provide additional perspectives on my artistic practice, including responses to the exhibition of this work at the Minneapolis Institute of Art’s @artsmia U.S. Bank Gallery as part of the MAEP Program in 2023. Book is available via my website. Links in bio.

Mark your calendars! We will be having a curator + artists’ talk for “Memory Against Forgetting” on Saturday, August 1, 4pm to 6pm. “Memory Against Forgetting” is a photographic group exhibition of works by FotoMatter Collective artists. The exhibition title is inspired by a quote from the Czech novelist Milan Kundera: “The struggle of man against power is the struggle of memory against forgetting.” Kundera’s words remind us that memory is not passive. Remembering, whether personal, cultural, political, or historical, can be a form of resistance. Power often relies on erasure, silence, or the rewriting of narratives. To remember is to push back against that forgetting and to preserve identity, experience, and truth. The works included in this show span across lens-based photography, alternative process, installation, participatory work, book arts, and time-based media — a representation of the diverse practices of FotoMatter collective artists. PARTICIPATING ARTISTS: Justin D. Allen, Melissa Borman, Priscilla Briggs, Peter Happel Christian, Catherine J. Davis, Shoshana Fink, Leslie Grant, Brett Kallusky, Anthony Marchetti, Laura Migliorino, Briar Pine, Areca Roe, David Schalliol, Christopher Selleck, Paul Shambroom, Xavier Tavera, Forrest Wasko, and Michelle Westmark Wingard FotoMatter is a Minnesota-based collective of artists and makers. Rooted in critique and collaboration, FotoMatter fosters a stronger, more inclusive community by uplifting its members’ creative practices. Transitioning from a critique group to a fully realized collective, FotoMatter cultivates a dynamic, accessible environment for both members and the broader public. 🌜NEW Album Out Now!🌛 MOONSHINER SPRINGS can be streamed everywhere (except Spotify) and purchased as digital files globally and vinyl record in the USA on Bandcamp.com -:- It was passed due for a good time. So, I made Moonshiner Springs. There were some hard things. Forest fires had me on the run. My father passed. And, suddenly, my health was fragile. I lost a lot. Luckily, after a move home to South Dakota, my songs came too. Then Carly called. My good friend, Carly Bond (Meerna), wanted to visit South Dakota. She flew from Los Angeles with a big trunk of recording gear. It was late summer with good weather. We had so much fun capturing songs in my grandparent’s old living room. We swam in the river. Got sand in the car. Enjoyed the golds and greens of the upper plains. Moonshiner Springs features a significant and nuanced contribution from Mat Davidson (Twain, Adrianne Lenker, Buck Meek, Natalie Jane Hill). It was clear in my mind. I told Carly I wanted violin, pedal steel, and harmonies. She said, “Well, you know who can do all that.” We both were thinking of Mat. I’m so grateful he was free, and said yes. We completed Moonshiner Springs at Carly’s studio, Altamira Sound, in Los Angeles. There I reunited with artists from my previous release, Love Lives Where Rules Die. Rob Shelton and Carly engineered. Doug Stuart (Brijean) laid down bass with heart and style, as always. Andrew Maguire brought his agile drums and percussion. I was introduced to Jesse McGinty’s extraordinary horn playing. Andrea Bambina and Gracie Jackson added harmonies that sound like angels who’d join you for a river swim. Moonshiner Springs is an album created by the illumination and gifts born in times of grief and frailty. As steady as hardships arrive, so too comes friendship, flying to the rescue. -Suzanne ✨💛✨LOVE ABOUNDS Suzanne Vallie’s newest album -• MOONSHINER SPRINGS •- 🌹 CREDITS Film by - Areca Roe Edited by - Suzanne Vallie All songs written by Suzanne Vallie Produced by Carly Bond @_meernaa_ Engineered by Carly Bond and Rob Shelton Mixed by Rob Shelton @bobbykamalino Mastered by Dave McNair @mcsnare Suzanne Vallie - piano, vocals, synthesizer @suz
