Maroon Arts Group and Artfluential present WHITELAND, a limited-run solo exhibition by artist David Butler at The Maroon Culture Lab. Opening against the backdrop of a consequential election season, WHITELAND enters into conversation with our current political moment, inviting us to examine how whiteness operates not simply as identity, but as a structure of power embedded in our institutions, politics, and everyday lives. Each portrait becomes a mirror, challenging viewers to sit with discomfort and consider their own relationship to power. Through large-scale, AI-generated portraits, Butler interrogates the aesthetics of whiteness, power, and privilege in America. Drawing from the constructs of “whiteness” and “gangland,” the exhibition confronts the systems that shape our cultural and political realities. “I want you to feel the stares. I want you to look into eyes that don’t care. Are you safe? Do you feel supported? Fam, I honestly didn’t expect the response to the Church Fan Studies & devotional. These started as a deeply personal creative practice a place for me to wrestle with faith, Black church tradition, culture, memory, liberation and all the contradictions that live between them. I started sharing the studies online, first to keep myself accountable to the practice and second cause I figure others are wrestling too. y’all have shown them more love than I could have imagined. And yes, I’ve seen all the messages asking, “When can I get one?” Eventually, more of you will. But the first physical release needed to mean something. This year marks 10 years of @maroonartsgroup an organization I helped co-found, and we’re celebrating inside a space that has become a sanctuary for our own cultural production. It felt right that these objects rooted so deeply in Black cultural and spiritual memory for me would first become available here, with our people, in our space. So this Saturday at AFRO—, I’m releasing a small first edition of select Church Fan Studies. In person only. Only Available as an add-on for AFRO— ticket holders while they last. More will come.
