Emma's Sinter Pour!

An exciting day for the team as we sintered the new addition to our family of furnaces.

Emma's work was the maiden pour.

Emma has been walking and tracing her tracks during her time with us.
Her work has an element of surveying and cartography, but while maps can be loaded with political and colonial history, Emma's walks and subsequent maps reveal a mapping of herself over many days.
"...the mapper mapping oneself, rather than the mapper mapping potential acquisitions.'

The crucible studios will be open Sunday 25 October from 10am until 3pm.

Come meet Emma and see what she has been up to.
Emma will be talking about her practice and her time here as resident artist from 1.30pm until 2pm.

Following a long trip south from Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, we were delighted to welcome our 2026 Crucible Residency artist, Emma Stretch, to Ōamaru.

Emma has settled in and begun exploring the town through walking and mapping her daily journeys, while considering the many converging influences that shape our people and land as she develops her practice here at the Crucible Studios.

We’re excited to share Emma’s experiences and the work that emerges during her time with us over the coming weeks.

A special thank you to the Ōamaru community, who have already extended such a warm welcome to Emma. We’re looking forward to seeing where her time here leads.

The Ngāmotou Student Print Club will be showing a selection of work from the level 5 Printmaking and level 6 Printmaking ākonga from @witt_art_design. In these print courses the students learn how to successfully create a print by engaging with print history, idea generation, matrix creation, registration, colour theory, tool handling, press operation, and print editioning. These ākonga are also encouraged to discover the community surrounding printmaking, and as a result created a student run print club.

Some sigils I’ve been working on, trying to do them in a more clean and presentable way but the best ones are scratched upside down in my wet notebook lol

Welcoming Emma Stretch to the galleries team 👏

You may have seen on our stories, Emma Savage left the galleries team a few months ago to study abroad in Glasgow! We now have the amazing Emma Stretch on board with Caitlin and Chanel.

Emma Stretch is in her second year of her BFA. Her practice centres around process-making and the origins of her materials. Through the mediums of print and painting, her work captures the essence of life forms, exploring their differentiation and interrelation. She is continuously evaluating what it means to make art in the Anthropocene.
