What does “I trust you” really mean?

For Gabe, living with bipolar disorder has shaped how he experiences trust. He reflects on how trust in his relationships has evolved throughout his recovery and why actions matter as much as words.

“When you mean it, say it and show it.”

A hard week looks different when you live with bipolar disorder.

Sometimes getting out of bed is the hardest part and the consequences are far more serious.

Gabe talks about why support starts with understanding what someone is actually facing, not assuming what they need or rushing to offer advice.

Share this with your supports if it resonates.

In this episode, we sit down with Helen Blair Simpson, MD, PhD, Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (@columbiapsychiatry), Director of the Center for OCD and Related Disorders, ADAA Past President, and ADAA Ambassador for Women's Mental Health. Gabe and Dr. Simpson talk about why women face anxiety and depression at twice the rate of men, and why so many answer "I'm fine" when they're not. Together, they unpack:

• How to tell everyday stress from a condition worth treating: persistence, distress, and impairment

• Why stigma, lack of awareness, and hard-to-reach care keep women suffering in silence

• Why asking for help takes strength, and doesn't cost it

• How loved ones can open the conversation without pushing

What we get wrong about bipolar. People talk about bipolar disorder as highs and lows. Mania and depression.

Gabe Howard @askabipolar thinks that leaves out something important: the middle.

The days when you’re working, making plans, taking the bus. Maybe a little symptomatic, maybe not.

Why does the middle get so little attention?

In this episode, we sit down with Jonathan Schettino, PhD, ADAA member expert, licensed psychologist, and research psychologist at the Johns Hopkins Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research, to talk about how psychedelics went from illegal drugs to serious clinical science — and what that research actually shows. Together, they unpack:

• Why a standardized dose matters: a Big Mac is a Big Mac anywhere, a deli sandwich is a gamble
• What happens during psychedelic-assisted therapy — and why it isn't just "tripping"
• Whether adding psychotherapy makes the treatment work better (the jury's still out)
• Retreats, underground providers, and what to look for when there's no oversight

Health anxiety isn't caused by symptoms. It's fueled by uncertainty and the endless search for reassurance." — Karen Cassiday, PhD.

In this episode, we sit down with Karen Cassiday, PhD, former ADAA president and author of "Freedom from Health Anxiety," to talk about what actually drives health anxiety — and what helps. Together, they unpack:

• Why over-testing rarely brings peace of mind
• The reassurance-seeking cycle (and how to break it)
• Why health anxiety is highly treatable, even if it can't be "cured"

Everyone worries - bills, family, work, the future. Anxiety is a normal human experience, but when does everyday stress cross the line into Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)?

In this episode, @askabipolar sits down with therapist and anxiety specialist Ben Eckstein, LCSW (author of Worrying Is Optional). Together, they unpack:
How GAD is actually diagnosed
Why avoidance feeds anxiety (and makes it worse)
How CBT and medication can help you reclaim your life

Can your smartphone become part of your mental health treatment? Prescription digital therapeutics (PDTs) promise to do exactly that.

🎙️In this episode, @askabipolar sits down with digital psychiatry expert Dr. John Torous and clinical psychologist Dr. Michelle Patriquin to break down what PDTs actually are (and aren't), how mental health apps fit into real treatment, and how to tell an FDA-cleared tool from a wellness app that just looks official.

When Gabe was first diagnosed, he believed something many people are told to believe: “This is who I am now. I’ll never get better.” That belief didn’t bring hope. It made him stop trying.

Gabe shares how believing change wasn’t possible led his mental health to spiral even further, and why having hope for improvement can change everything.

This is an honest conversation about diagnosis, healing, and why the stories we believe about ourselves matter.

Most people assume only the lonely, disconnected, or socially isolated are susceptible to joining cults. But that’s not true.

The common thread I’ve seen is pain. Not a specific group of people or a particular background. Pain is part of every human experience, which means anyone can be vulnerable.

Pain creates a longing for certainty, belonging, purpose, and answers. And that’s exactly where unhealthy systems know how to gain influence.

Understanding what really makes us vulnerable isn’t about judgment; it’s about recognizing something deeply human.

All emotions tell us a story.

One of the most common terms I hear when people describe their emotions is “irrational.” But that’s never really the case.

Emotion doesn’t come out of nowhere. It’s either a response to what’s happening in the present or it’s connected to something that happened in the past. Either way, there’s a reason it’s there.

That doesn’t mean every emotional reaction is helpful or that every response is wise. But what it does mean is that we need to understand it to move forward or heal.

Instead of asking, “What’s wrong with you?” try asking, “What happened?” You may be surprised by what you discover.

Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
