I love when every corner has a detail. Objects that tell a story, like an antique oil painting from @lamaisonsupreme hung above a modern chair from @assemblylineshop . Another antique oil painting, depicting wilting flowers and quite expressive for its age, enters into conversation with a plaster floral arrangement by @stephencantonson.

These little moments of tension between old and new help carry the Blue Period’s design motif throughout the room at the @brooklynshowhouse , revealing themselves in the details and vignettes along the way.

When designing the partial-height bookshelves for my room at @brooklynshowhouse, I wanted the built-ins to feel quietly connected to the history of the home while still speaking to the needs of modern family life. Subtle curves and simplified detailing create a balance somewhere between minimalist modern millwork and traditional retranslation.

That tension between old and new carries throughout the drawing room and powder room, with the aim of honoring the character and history of the house while designing spaces that feel relevant in the way we live today. #custommillwork #interiordesign #designdetails

I’ve lately become obsessed with the color blue. Its nuance and range of hues have drawn me in over the past year. In the spring, I saw an Introspective article featuring a restored Georgian manor with a drawing room painted in pale blue. In early summer, an oil painting I stumbled upon at the Clark Institute showed a young woman in her bedroom, its walls painted robin’s egg blue. And, while experiencing The Odyssey in theaters, I was entranced by the sweeping shots of gray-blue ocean expanse looking down upon the Greek ships - it took my breath away.

Throughout these moments of seeing blue, various references came to mind. I remembered studying Yves Klein and the iconic, copyrighted International Klein Blue (IKB). The somber yet striking beauty of Picasso’s The Old Guitarist. The ethereal quality of Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus, as Venus’s head rests against the pale blue sky in the distance. Blue has long been a desirable hue; the pigment’s rich history carries associations with royalty, and semi-precious stones like lapis lazuli were often used by the Old Masters to create their most meaningful works. With that in mind, HH Studio created a world of blue.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, many Brooklyn brownstones would have included a drawing room for withdrawing after entertaining guests for a moment of relaxation. Often, to showcase the homeowner’s wealth and status, these rooms were covered in blue, referencing the color’s ties to nobility. Now, once again, One Monroe Place has a drawing room: a sophisticated, whimsical, modern interpretation of the type, still drenched in beautiful shades of blue. HH Studio is proud to present Blue Period. @brooklynshowhouse

Lucky to have clients with great taste, although coveting my own sourcing finds comes with the territory 💛

A few current favourites:
@adriennamatzeg’s art, the @wearepampa Forma #2 rug, Holger Johansson’s Model 450 lamp for Westal and a few other goodies I wouldn’t mind keeping for myself.

The story behind this one: our clients used to live in London, and the direction for this bathroom was inspired by the colors of Paddington Bear’s kitchen & of course his yellow raincoat. 🐻 I designed this space for two kiddos to share, and it’s the details of the hidden floral tile pattern, the two-tone globe sconces, that make getting ready for school every morning a little more fun. ✨
