This was my 4th attempt at a Greek/Roman “greedy cup”. There is a siphon hidden in the middle of the cup and if you are not greedy and you pour yourself a reasonable amount of wine, the cup would work like a normal cup. But… if you are greedy and pour yourself too much, the siphon will activate and empty your cup in your lap. I do not love how the painting came out, so I’m refiring it. Since I’ve had such bad luck on this project, I’m worried it will blow up in the kiln, and I wanted a video to show that I made one that worked at some point.

This is my version of an ancient Chinese hu. The original was made of bronze which is much easier to use to join up the handle segments. I tried making it all in clay, but the connections kept cracking. So I decided to use copper wire, and I like the contrast in materials. It was made with my favorite Atlantic Autumn White clay made by Laguna. The color was made by sponge painting lots of layers of Kiwi Underglaze in 2 different bisque firings. #kiwiunderglaze #lagunaclay #lagunaflorida #atlanticpotterysupply #ancienychina #ancienthu #asianmuseumsanfrancisco #ancientpotteryreplicas

This is my third Mogollon/Mibres bowl. When researching artifacts to replicate I’m am constantly drawn to the sharp black and white imagery. Instead of making 4 different bowls based on the images I liked I used elements from them all to make one compilation bowl. It is made from #70 Laguna clay and painted with Kiwi Underglazes. #mogollon #mimbres #fineartsmuseumofsanfrancisco #frederickrweismanartmuseum #berrybowen #thechicagoartinstitute #lagunaclay #kiwiunderglaze #atlanticpotterysupply

Today felt like a trip back in time.

For our school district professional development hosted by @atlanticpotterysupply We got a double headliner workshop and lecture by @stephenheywood and @kathyskaggsclay .

I graduated from the business school at @uofnorthflorida in 2013 with a degree in economics. But it was Steve's magnetism and joy for the medium that drew me into ceramics and led me to pursue this career path. Incidentally, my current classroom is the one where Kathy Skaggs taught when she taught at Nease!

One of the things that inspires me so much about days like today is seeing how much joy these 2 professionals retain for the craft. And, the ever experimenting, learning, and engaging spirit as they continue to push their own aesthetic boundaries and teach others to do the same.

This is my version of aa ancient Etruscan oil pitcher. I had been waiting to build this piece until I felt ready to attempt throwing a donut. It was a fun one to decorate, again using my favorite Kiwi underglazes. #kiwiunderglaze #potteryreplica #historic pottery #princetonmuseumofart #atlanticpotterysupply

This is still my favorite replica I’ve made. It’s a replica of a Viking horn made in the 11th Century CE. It was made using my favorite white clay, Laguna’s Atlantic Autumn’s White with a underglaze wash mix of Amaco”s Terra Cotta and Red Brown. This piece has inspired me to become more and more ambitious with my builds. #atlanticpotterysupply #amacobrent #lagunaclay #vikings #drinkinghorn #narvavägen #museumofswedishhistory #stolkholm #historicreplica

One of my first historic pots was a replica of a Jomon pot from ancient Japan. I don’t tend to make my replica pots thin walled (understatement), so this pot does not only resemble an exercise kettle bell, it has the weight to be used as one.

I had the joy of taking a hand building class this week (might be an intro to the dark side 👀) and got to make a fish with Lily @plush_ceramics at Atlantic Pottery Studio @atlanticpotterysupply

I had so much fun that I went home that day and made a second one, but a little different 🐔🐟

What’s your favorite thing to handbuild?

Pottery from the Mimbres Valley during the Mogollon culture catches my eye every time I do research for a new piece. So I’ve decided to make a trio of my three favorite Mimbres designs. Once again I used Kiwi Underglazes, which I find moves on clay like a quality paint moves on canvas.
