July left me deflated and discouraged. It’s a month-long story full of excitement and a let down that I’m having trouble writing about in a condensed manner. I feel disillusioned and naive for discovering yet another way our system is meant to gaslight, gatekeep, and girlboss you into 1) feeling powerless and 2) going into debt, and I can tell you the full story over a drink but basically, I applied for a brick and mortar spot in red hook for @backroom_books just after July 4th. We’d been running the pop up at the brewery for over five months, we’d been interviewed by time out magazine and local news channels, and I wanted to make it real. I wanted my own space to offer affordable books, and to offer a community space for readings, small classes, and events. The plan was to treat it as a two year project that would likely not be profitable, but to offer reading material as knowledge, as exploration, as escape, and as empowerment– as the first general bookstore in my neighborhood of red hook.

A tiny spot was available just off the main drag and in the next few weeks while I dealt with an imo unprofessional and unhelpful realtor, I paid for a lawyer and filed for an LLC. I opened a business bank account and put the 20k I’d saved up for the store in it. The bookstore consumed all my thoughts for the entire month; I was trying to imagine life working two jobs again, planning how to best utilize the small space, researching what other tiny bookstores do to make rent, waking up from dreams about it being real, running ideas past my friends, and wondering every day if the whole thing was a reckless and stupid thing to do. I was excited and scared and hopeful.
