Our Terroir has landed in London 🍇

Terroir is everything that makes a place taste like itself, so we asked some of our favourite bars to show us theirs with Renais.

11 bars across London have each created their own pop-up menu of Renais cocktails with a twist. Every serve is inspired by something close to the bar’s DNA: a memory, a place, or an ingredient that means something to them. Eleven bars, eleven menus, eleven stories.

Over the next few weeks we’ll introduce each bar and the special menu they’ve created, so keep your eyes peeled 👀

Of course a Negroni isn’t just for Negroni Week but this annual celebration of gin, sweet vermouth and bitters is upon us again so here’s a quick and entirely subjective collection of editorial favourites in London if you’re looking for somewhere to imbibe, all highly recommended (some of these will be familiar so consider it refresher training; others are new entries). In no particular order:

First, Amaro in Kensington (naturally) (photo 1). What a bar. But virtually next door is the often overlooked Stables Bar at The Milestone (photo 2) - always great attention to detail there as evidenced by the clear ice and gorgeous glassware.

Then, the Negroni at Brutto which is still an inflation-defying £5 (photo 3), the Termini Negroni (photo 4) served sans dilution and to the brim (seasoned barflies will dip their heads and sip directly to avoid spillage).

The Donovan Bar (photo 5) serve parmesan and olives with any cocktail but these complement their Negronis (and martinis) particularly well. Down the road, The American Bar at The Stafford (photo 6) allows you to fully customise your Negroni (and rightly so). They serve this with an origami orange twist which may tickle your nose.

In the same neck of the woods, the bar at Bellamy’s is also often overlooked, which is silly because you get a very generous serve here (photo 7). (Also excellent direct martinis.)

For a boozier Negroni, Upstairs at Rules (photo 8) and St John (various sites) (photo 9) where the gin is dialled up a tad.

And finally, some twists. Baudry Greene with their delicious Rouge Clair Negroni (photo 10), the “Davaroni” on request at The Thin White Duke in Soho (if you know you really know - photo 11), and last but not least, the carrot and watermelon Negroni at lovely Bar Gemišt in Holloway, one of the nicest bars to open in London in the last year (photo 12)

London bars with outstanding drinks that are budget friendly - part 1 of 2

There is a version of this list that is just cheap drinks, and it would be a worse list.

What actually links these seven is prep. The Umbrella Workshop (@umbrellaproject) is a production space as much as a bar, and the drinks developed there turn up at the Sun Tavern (@thesuntavernbg) and Discount Suit Company (@discountsuitco) too, all three founded by Andy Kerr. Little Mercies (@littlemercies) is run by the Venning family, the people behind Three Sheets, which has now drifted above £13 while Little Mercies has not. Uros Dezutelj spent five years running the bar at 69 Colebrooke Row before opening Gemišt (@bargemist) under a railway arch in Holloway.

That is the answer to the question the price raises. Work done once, carefully, and spread across a menu is what lets a bar charge £11 and still hand you something built with intent. It is not thrift. It is a different way of running a bar.

Satan's Whiskers (@satans_whiskers) works differently again, and is the reason the list is ranked rather than just listed. The menu is rewritten every day, which is the opposite of batching and ought to cost more, not less. It is routinely named among the best bars in the world and among the best in the country, and it charges from £13. If you want a single piece of evidence that price has stopped predicting quality in this city, it is a bar in Bethnal Green that could charge Mayfair money tomorrow and does not.

The uncomfortable part is the map. Every one of these is east or north. Under £13 outside a happy hour has almost stopped existing west of the City, which tells you that what you are buying in Mayfair is not always the drink.

Five more in part two, and three of them share a pavement.

A long weekend of loveliness at some old (and new) favourite places in London including, in rough order, a Negroni at the Zetter Bloomsbury followed by Café Deco (where no two meals will ever be the same but will always be excellent - here are the mozzarella with marinated peppers and ruby chard and a pork chop with creamed corn and spinach). To follow, a Rouge Clair Negroni at Baudry Greene in Covent Garden.

Oh, and a direct Egerton martini (with Welsh rarebit, not pictured), another excellent meal at Medlar and an Aviation at Amaro. And for good measure, a visit to Authentique Epicerie in Tufnell Park and trying out the Riesling and flammkuchen combination (£12) at the delightful Bar Gemišt in Holloway. Busy old weekend to round off the summer.

이 일상의 익숙함에 속아 소중함을 잃을 때 쯤 한국 잠깐 한 번은 갈 거 같은데 타이밍 맞는 사람은 만나서 막걸리 or 소맥 달려주기 약속🤙🏻

Our mixologists at @bargemist curated a bespoke collection of non-alcoholic cocktails for Joyride Festival Isle of Wight mixed with @cleanco, as a refined homage to our legends, with each serve thoughtfully created to reflect their stories.

From the sharp elegance of the @sportsorla to the vibrant energy of the @petetongofficial and the unconventional spirit of the @taylorphinney, these CleanCo serves were a masterclass in balance. We’re still catching traces of coconut, smooth caramel, apricot, and vanilla, all rounded off with that signature spicy, warming finish.

A sophisticated weekend of clean cocktails that were enjoyed out on the roads too.
