Goldie locks

One dog you don’t see much of on my page is this Ol boy right here, Otter pup. He’s a seasoned vet who doesn’t participate much in the drills so he gets lost sometimes, but I always try to snag a couple while he’s around. Especially during the golden hour.
•
Since I’ve had the great privilege to work with Ben and the boys at @griffinhowegundogs there has been no lack of gun dogs to photograph. It’s no secret they’re my favorite subjects and no two times are the same. It’s what I love about it. And learning each dogs personalities is quite the challenge. Like humans some love the attention and soak it all up or they completely despise the fact that I even exist. And of course all the in-betweens. I haven’t posted much lately but it’s not for a lack of content creation. I’ll try to share some more of what I’ve been up to.

Good boy

Grouse looking on, waiting for the signal from his owner. He knows why he’s here.

There’s no secret that I love watching handlers bring new working pups up to speed, that transformation is a tough one to beat. But, a started dog bringing a new owner up to speed is a whole different set of emotions. This boy knows what he can get away with and how to manipulate his handler. Now that isn’t to blame the handler for a lack of knowledge because he is also willing to learn and soak up as much knowledge as a young pup. It’s essentially a boxing match going back and forth, trading blows to the body, until one day they are going to come out best friends. Same bond formed, different road taken to get there. At the same time, in a very odd way, this battle fuels me. I find it very hard to take the typical dog training photos, these moments deserve more. Different angles, different views, different depths, different everything. Because that’s what these moments are, different. Rare at best. They deserve everyone in that moment pushing themselves and the limits as hard as they can. As far as they can because that’s where we are gonna learn, on the outskirts. I’m fairly certain every one of us made mistakes and grew from them this day. I’m here for it all.

That’s all folks

Today marks the first day of what is referred to as the offseason. Always an odd feeling.
•
There’s no more vigorously checking weather, wind and everything included with it. I will still scout but with nowhere near the intensity it had before. No more planning and talking about the next days hunt and who’s coming. It’s over. Time for the honey do list. I had a fantastic year and I’d say I pulled the trigger less than any year before. The real wins are in the amazing people I met along the way and the moments shared with new and old friends. I can’t say I have the quantity of photos I usually pull out of a season but the ones I do have probably hold the most quality than any season before. I’ll take that any year. I definitely grew from a photography standpoint and I hope that never changes year over year. I’m finally feeling like the camera is an extension of my eye which can only mean more growth is coming as long as I stay the course. Thank you to everyone who was involved in my 2022-23 season, you all made it an amazing year. Not that I would ever rank them by any means but the season I always view as the best is the next one. And next year my oldest starts his journey as a first time hunter. That has me extremely excited and nervous at the same time. So thank you everyone for joining me on this path I’m on. I appreciate every like and all the words of encouragement along the way. You guys/gals are the best.

You’ll never steal his fire, non-stop, hunting around the clock, always down for #birddoggin

That’s no pen-reared bird that’s 100% all-natural organic wild caught Northern Bobwhite Quail. Great dog work, lots of miles, there has been roughly 16 miles on the ground to make this harvest and it’s special. I got to see my boy Willie flush the bird, and we bagged it, some credit goes to Mac, he’s our English Pointer friend, he’s still learning and he did give us a quick little flash point and when Willie caught the same scent make did it was game on and in a matter of second I had Bobwhites in my face.

Excellent hunt and there is definitely a story coming with it soon!

// The key to success is to focus on the goals, not the obstacles.//

There are two mindsets in life, “fixed” and “growth”. Which one are you? Do you feel your skills are limited and that you’ve got no potential for growth or do you believe that you can learn to improve a skill and through hard work better yourself and be successful on the practiced and nurtured skill?

One of the most important words of advice I’ve received in my sales career was “Always be teachable.” No matter how hard I worked and how much success I obtained, if I fell into a fixed mindset and just felt that I was a natural, I would’ve become stale and eventually failed but I’m a growth minded individually, I always knew there was an area for growth, even if it were my weakest area, even if someone labeled me as unskilled in that area, I knew I would prevail by applying myself, pushing myself allowing someone successful in that area to teach me.

I’m taking 2022 by the horns, this is the year of growth, or multiplication, of enhanced skill and positivity. We live in a world of negativity, don’t let that steal your positive charge.
