Have you ever sabotaged a relationship for safety?

@tiarnylowe has had to start her life over three times, and the first time she lost everything, her identity, her money and her business, which went into liquidation, and it took her five years to rebuild.

What she had to rebuild wasn’t the furniture or the bank account so much as herself, and then the way she showed up in her relationships, because you can’t build anything solid with someone else until you’ve put yourself back together first.

She’s had to do it again since then, and even though it was never as hard as the first time, it leaves a mark that follows you into whatever comes next.

Tiarny is honest about where that left her when she met Ben, which was carrying a quiet fear that if this relationship didn’t work out she’d be back to having nothing all over again.

If you’ve ever walked into something good still braced for it to fall apart, this conversation between Tiarny and @benlowecoaching is for you.

Then she lost everything, the business went into liquidation, the money was gone and so was the identity she’d built around being the woman who made it work, and it took her five years to rebuild from the ground up.

On this episode of the @modernpartnership podcast, Tiarny and @benlowecoaching talk through all of it, including the lesson she carried out the other side, which is that the quality of your life is dictated by the quality of the relationships you’re in.

If you’re building something while carrying more at home than anyone knows, this conversation is for you.

For a long time I thought she just didn’t like me.

That’s what it looked like from the outside. No warmth, no interest, nothing coming back. I’d turn up, do the right thing, and get nothing.

It took me a while to work out she wasn’t rejecting me at all. She was being loyal to two different people, and both of them deserved it.

The first was her mum. She’d watched her family change once already and she wasn’t about to hand her mum over to some new bloke who reckoned he was different. Every man says that. Why would she take my word for it.

The second one took me a lot longer to see.

She has a dad. A good one, who she loves and still has a great relationship with, and she should.

And in her head, if she let herself get close to me, she was taking something off him. That’s how a kid does the maths. Love is a fixed amount, so anything she gave me came out of his pile. Getting close to me felt like a betrayal of her father.

She was never going to say that out loud. She was a kid.

So I had two jobs, and only one of them was earning her trust.

The other was making it completely clear, over and over, in a hundred small ways, that I was never asking her to choose.

I never asked her to call me anything. I never corrected her when she talked about her dad. I never pulled a face, never competed, never made her manage my feelings about him. When she went to his place I made sure she knew I thought that was a good thing, because I did.

Because the thing she needed to learn was never that I was alright.

It was that she could love two men at once and lose absolutely nothing.

That took a long time. There was no moment it changed. It just stopped being a question.

If you’re a stepdad getting nothing back right now, keep turning up. It isn’t rejection. It’s a kid working out whether loving you costs her someone else.

Send this to a bloke who needs it.

To become a good man, part of me had to die.

The old me had no right being a father…

I don’t say that for effect. Fifteen years into addiction, eight of them on ice, six trips to prison. I had no idea who I was so I filled the gap with whatever was easiest, and the second things got hard I’d run away.

That was the whole personality. Walk in, fuck shit up, leave.

The morning it changed I woke up with a black eye from a blue with my housemate and my car crashed into the front fence of my own house.

I dragged myself along the wall to the bathroom basin to stop the room spinning, looked up into the mirror and said out loud “IM SICK OF THIS SHIT”.

Here’s the part nobody warns you about though.

I got clean and I was still the same bloke. The drugs were gone. But my patterns were the same. I was sober and still dissociated, still chasing highs, still wrecking things and still convinced I wasn’t the problem.

So what actually changed it wasn’t getting sober...

It was keeping small promises to myself until I had evidence I wasn’t who I’d always thought I was. 5 years worth of doing exactly what I said i would. Setting a MISOGI each year and completing it every time no matter what. Every one of them a deposit to my self-worth which had been in a deficit my whole life.

And once that account had something in it, the old behaviour stopped showing up. Because it was no longer who I was.

Then I had to change the people around me, because you can’t outgrow an environment while you’re still standing in it.

And the last bit, the one I’d never have admitted back then. I had to let people teach me. I didn’t work any of this out on my own, I’m not that clever. Someone had to show me, and I had to be willing to be seen while I was learning.

That’s what bought me this.

A wife who doesn’t have to manage her way around me. Kids who don’t avoid me when I come through the door. A second son on the way, and a first one who gets to watch his dad do it properly.

It’s never too late and It starts with the next promise you keep.

Everyone says they want to earn a million dollars a year, and @harveyriversofficial reckons that goal on its own will never get you out of bed on the hard days, because a number doesn’t mean anything until you know what’s sitting underneath it.

His exercise is to take whatever you think you want and ask yourself why ten or eleven times in a row, and keep going until you hit the answer that actually hits you in the chest.

When Harvey did it, a million dollars turned into financial freedom, which turned into more time, which turned into supporting his family, and when he kept digging he found the real reason, which is that his mum raised him on her own in a working-class home and worked her backside off her whole life, and he wants to pay off her mortgage so she never has to struggle through retirement.

Once that became the reason, the size of the number stopped mattering, because every day he gets a little better than he was yesterday he’s one step closer to paying off his mum’s house.

If your goals aren’t pulling you forward anymore, sit down tonight with a pen, write the goal at the top of the page and keep asking why until you find the one that’s worth getting up for.

The full episode with Harvey, @benlowecoaching and @tiarnylowe is out now on the @modernpartnership podcast, on YouTube and Spotify with the link in our bio.

📌 Save this so you can do the exercise tonight, and send it to someone who’s chasing a number without knowing why.

This is something every father needs to hear 👇🏽

The damage drinking does to your ability to parent is never only about the big nights out, it’s in all the small moments you aren’t emotionally present for.

@harveyriversofficial challenges every man to walk in the door tonight, put their phone in a drawer and leave it there, because you’ll start noticing things about your kids you’ve been missing for months.

Give it a few nights and you’ll find yourself on the floor playing doctors or some ridiculous game they’ve made up, and that happens because they can finally see your head is up and you’re actually with them.

Your kids aren’t asking for a holiday or a big gesture, they just want you to be there when you’re in the room with them.

At 18, he was living his lifelong dream, playing professional football in front of 5,000 fans singing his name.

After one bad game, he was flipping chicken at Nando’s.

Today he’s the co-founder of Australia’s 5th fastest growing company.

This is @harveyriversofficial .

Hear what it takes to have your dream ripped away, move to a completely foreign country, and still build something most people only talk about.

A story of determination, grit and a whole lot of delusional optimism.

Watch the full conversation with Harvey, @benlowecoaching and @tiarnylowe on the latest episode of the @modernpartnership podcast.
