AWAKENING | DESTRUCTION, 2025

ABOUT
For the first time, the duo is presenting contaminated objects from their 2019 performance of the same name in a large-scale installation. Divided spatially into two states, the artists address a past event: the explosion of a contaminating fluorescent tube in their studio.
[...]
The architecture of the Biesenbach Gallery itself also becomes a site-specific theme: a niche mutates into an entrance to a walled-up, locked room. A hinted-at laboratory in which a plant grows, rising out of the fog. A vacuum bag with contaminated objects protrudes from it. A second object state, frozen in an unfinished process.
Through installative relics and spatial interventions, a field of tension arises between destruction and new beginnings, between the sealed and the open. The viewer moves between these poles and is invited to witness a healing that may never take place, or a catastrophe that never ends.
[…]
The arrangement is accompanied by a video documenting the performative event of 2019: the formation of contaminated objects into sculptures as a happening accompanied by ritualistic acts. However, the video is detached from the linear narrative of the performance. This creates a feeling of constant repetition – destruction, reconstruction, ritual, contamination. A loop that keeps us trapped in the metaphor of transition.

It marks the thin transition between functioning civilisation and destruction; the beginning of a dissolution. […]
