One of the most architecturally rich cities in the UK, Edinburgh isn’t short of striking, storied heritage buildings. In its New Town UNESCO World Heritage Site – one of its most renowned civic neighbourhoods – a prominent mixed-use property, Six St Andrew Square, has just received a warm welcome by London-based architecture and design practice, @bgyarchitects.

Tapped to transform its communal spaces, the brief was a simple one: craft an arrival experience that was designed to impress, while incorporating contemporary amenities fit for the increasingly multi-faceted, high-end office of today – including a flexible events space, end-of-trip facilities and curated artwork.

The perfect architectural photograph sometimes takes two days to make.

Not because taking the photograph takes two days.
Because the right conditions might only exist for a few minutes.

That was the case at 6 St Andrew Square in Edinburgh, where we recently photographed a major lobby refurbishment for @KanAm Grund delivered in collaboration with @bgyarchitects

As a team, we wanted the photography to do justice to both the architecture and the transformation of the asset.
And that meant waiting.
Waiting for daylight to fall in the right direction.
Watching how reflections changed across the glazing.
Finding the moment when the interior and exterior light levels balanced.
Returning in the evening when the lobby lighting transformed the building’s presence from the street.

Some compositions worked best during the day, when natural light revealed the materials, proportions and architectural detailing.
Others only came alive after dark.

So what could have been approached as a few hours of documentation became a two day architectural shoot that was deliberately planned around the building rather than asking the building to work around our schedule.

That’s one of the differences between simply photographing a completed project and chasing the photographs that will represent it at its very best.
Sometimes the perfect image is less about the equipment.
It’s about knowing when to come back.
A fantastic project for @officecurator to capture for KanAm Grund Group in Edinburgh.

Our Emme seating looks amazing in this reception area! It’s a project we are proud to be a part of. Everyone involved did a great job and Emme suits the modern, sleek aesthetic of its surroundings.

The @theshepherdmayfair opened last week amongst the Georgian townhouses and luxury boutiques of Mayfair, and I’m really pleased to have supplied the @loloeyrugsdesign Axminster carpet throughout the hotel.

Designed by @shepherdand_ and @bgyarchitects the Axminster over-tuft carpet can be found in the 82 guestrooms and corridors, and Axminster carpet in the lobby cafe. The carpet complements the luxury and authentic charm with thoughtful design and understated elegance.

Thanks to the team @shepherdand_ for providing us with the opportunity.

Earlier this week, just days before opening its doors, we were lucky enough to get a first look inside @theshepherdmayfair.

We heard from the project team, who were candid about the successes and the challenges they faced. The team talked through why they chose to stay independent, and the thinking behind creating a hotel with its own identity.

Then, of course, we got to explore the finished hotel for ourselves. The colour, the texture, the details – what a treat!

A huge thank you to our speakers for being so open about the journey behind the project.

And thank you to our event supporter @cantelo_lighting.

Saving cost, time and carbon by thinking inside the box.

20 Giltspur Street has been shortlisted for an NLA Award - a redevelopment underpinned by an engineering strategy that unlocked 30% more gross area and 41% more net internal area, while reducing cost by 30% and programme by 25%.

Despite significant vertical, horizontal and below-ground constraints, our floor-jacking strategy realigned two existing floor plates to unlock hidden volume and create space for an entirely new floor within the existing building envelope.

The approach also avoided 350m³ of demolition by retaining two existing metal deck slabs, reducing waste and embodied carbon through reuse.

Now on site and nearing completion, the 100,000 sq ft redevelopment, designed by Buckley Gray Yeoman for Norges Bank Investment Management and Simten Developments, has been pre-let to Octopus.

Congratulations to our clients and the wider project team on the recognition.
