POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

What a week it was! Our COFFEE AND CONVERSATIONS series at @upperhouse_hkg became a place for gathering and for discovering new formats to share knowledge. The Tea Room, draped in hand dyed indigo silk organza, held conversations, workshops, a creative salon, coffee, snacks (butterfly pea tinted to echo the pH Café, thank you to the F&B team), and cocktails. Often it felt more like intimate sharing than presentation, which we loved. Centered around community and collaboration, each session reflected both our approach and that of our guests. It began with On Community with Philip, @jakkai and @paosinis. The second moved into the Green Room for On Storytelling with @elizabethbklo, Tim Marlow and @chomchomw. Thursday opened with On Process between @alexakumikohatanaka and @clairekshea, which unfolded into a hands-on nature printing workshop using leaves foraged from around Pacific Place, Japanese ink and washi paper. On Collaboration brought an in-depth and intimate exchange between @pratchayaphinthong @zheng__mahler and @xue77 @billytanng, ending with a tasting of Thai artist-made chocolates by @narutampakorn. The day closed with a @thekulaparty salon, and a cocktail with @weizzagin to celebrate Kulapat Yantrasast. The week ended with Coffee with SATI, On Impact with @saks_r and @tomorrowmaybecolonykids.
From The Fields to L6 at Upper House, we realise how amazing it is to have such an incredible community around us that are so generous to share what they do. We are so inspired. Thank you to everyone who was a part of the series and who took the time to join us during such a crazy week, to Upper House Hong Kong and to @clairemelwani for offering us the platform.

Thank you dearest @alia.swastika for inviting me to show These Petrified Paths as part of the Sharjah Biennale (opens 5 Feb). Reimagining the work has been a deeply-felt experience, thanks to the superb team at SAF. We're installing it in Kalba Ice Factory, in a reworked version, that includes materials from the construction site at Khalid bin Mohammed school, UAE's first radio station (currently closed, that has undergone many uses and many lives), local linens and fabrics, concrete, shattered terrazo, steel, displaced flora, leaf litter, Kalba mud, rocks and sand.

Making 'These Petrified Paths' in 2022 was one of the hardest things I've ever done, in an already hard year. To carry the voices of people facing constant war, an ongoing genocide in Artsakh-Nagorno, and to be disregarded in the vicious global game of weighing the value of lives against oil, resource extraction and land grabbing. To witness the unseen labour of women, cultural custodians against eradication. To be privileged to hear these stories, be embraced by so many in Armenia and in the diaspora, to be part of a community. To ALL practices of active resistance and cultural persistence, in the home, the field, across generations, here or Gaza🍉, everywhere.
First commissioned by @rockbundartmuseum , the work comprises an eponymous feature film alongside 3 other video works, as well as an electrical pylon, photographic prints in linen and lace. Here, pylons march across the contested countryside, single-minded in purpose and tread. Ephemeral sentences appear like watermarks, and yet these words defy their transitory nature, for what is more short-sighted and fleeting than fossil-fuel reliance, and what has proved more enduring and persistent than the power of story and retelling.

My deep gratitude to the wisdom, verve and collaborative spirit of @xzhunowell who curated the exhibition at RAM, the wondrous Karen Wang on whom I continue to lean on so heavily, and all at Rockbund who first realised this work, including @billytanng who first invited me. Eternally grateful to my sister @shalmaliraopaterson (project manager, researcher, and companion) and @adichao (brilliant editing and sound design)

How to be Happy Together? At Para Site
“Together” in the title can be anyone and anything you could possibly think about, so potentially happy relationships can exist between anything. People, cities, ideas, entities, nations, objects, species, cultures, generations, subjects, times, groups, identities… Any pairings and juxtapositions, any coupling and duets, any junction and connections. There’s no answer, of course—only an invitation to ponder this theme.

Some nice moments from a recent shoot for the Financial Times and the Hong Kong Tourism Board. It was a lot of fun bouncing around Hong Kong with curator Billy Tang checking in on some beautifully diverse gallery spaces.

Thank you to Creative New Zealand Te Manu Ka Tau guest Billy Tang for visiting us in Ōtautahi last week, and for sharing so many insights about your approach to working with community, against and within structures, and ways of rerouting the resources we have access to. Thank you to @ucfinearts for their support, and to @artspace.aotearoa @ocaa_nz @creativenz who this kaupapa was presented in association with. Thanks also to everyone who attended Billy’s lecture and our roundtable discussion–hopefully these are ideas and conversations that might continue.
