What if a piece of chewing gum could spark an entrepreneurial journey?

For Dr. Binish Desai,innovation began with curiosity. At just 10, he experimented with converting water vapour into water for gardening. A year later, an unexpected experiment with chewing gum and paper sparked an idea that would shape his journey into waste innovation.

What followed was years of experimentation, eventually leading him to develop sustainable materials from industrial waste and build a career as an environmental innovator. Recognised in Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia in 2018, he continued exploring ways to turn overlooked waste into valuable resources.

That vision now extends to Pushpam.co, where sacred floral offerings are transformed into meaningful products, combining sustainability, spirituality, and opportunities for rural women artisans.

His journey reminds us that big ideas don't always begin with a business plan. Sometimes, they begin with curiosity, a small experiment, and the determination to keep exploring.

What if discarded Ganpati idols could help children build a better future? 🙏✨

Through ‘Visarjan Se Vidya Tak’, Beach Please founder Malhar Kaalambe and recycling expert Dr. Binish Desai are giving broken PoP idols a meaningful second life.

The initiative collects immersed idols after visarjan and recycles the material into useful products, including 760 study tables for children.

Beyond recycling, the project aims to create educational infrastructure, generate employment for rural and tribal women, and encourage meaningful CSR partnerships.

The team is now targeting 5,000 study tables in 2026.

Broken Ganpati idols are being given a new purpose in Maharashtra, where they are being turned into study tables for children. Under the ‘Visarjan Se Vidya Tak’ initiative, broken and immersed POP idols are collected and processed into study tables, benches and other useful products. So far, 760 study tables have been made for children.

The initiative involves Mumbai-based Malhar Kalambe, founder of Beach Please, and Gujarat-based recycling expert Dr. Binish Desai. According to Desai, the project aims to provide educational facilities to needy communities, create employment opportunities for rural and tribal women, and encourage companies to support the initiative through CSR.

Gratitude #004: THE STRENGTH OF A WOMAN !

Meeting her about 33 years back, as an aspiring architect, as she prepared for her entrance exam, is one of the best things that happened to me! A 17 year teenager, entered my life, and changed it forever. Here is what I realised during this amazing journey:

1. She has an unparalleled ability and capacity to love me inspite of all the inconsistencies I have exhibited towards her in my behaviour and priorities.

2. She has solid strength in her emotional core, while we together dealt with cancers to three of our parents. Her ability to remain calm & focussed on research for the treatments, was truly extraordinary, while I look back. She has truly been a support system for the family.

3. She could raise & shape both - @saumya_shah7 & & @sanjanashah.07, into such loving and fine adults, while I was so occupied into my passionate professional pursuits.

4. As an artist / designer, she raised one more child in @artobliquedesign, and in the last 18 years, have inspired so many budding artists around her, and helped create acceptance of these arts in projects, in our context. Also, this helped @studio_essteam create some projects where art integration gave them identity.

5. Her journey since the last one year with @pushpam.co and @nuoterra has been nothing short of stunning in shaping this initiative aimed to help our planet and its people.

I would never have imagined 33 years back, that someone who I didn’t knew then, would enter my life, take charge of it, and calmly steer it thru the thick and thin, and make this journey so smooth, so beautiful, and so exciting. Her contribution to my life is unexplainable and as she turns 50 today, I am totally out of words in expressing how much I feel indebted to her!

What happens to Ganesha idols after visarjan? 🙏

Most are made of Plaster of Paris, and the remnants usually end up as municipal waste. Dr. Binish Desai, the Recycle Man of India, saw something else in that waste.

In 2024, he launched the POP Ganesh Recycling Initiative in Mumbai, turning immersed idols into school benches, planters and gifting articles. That grew into From Devotion to Education, with Pushpam and Beach Please.
