"Guiding Light"

Something fun I did in 2025, that if you were around during one of my rare I went outside to a show excursions, you have already seen. Let it be a reminder - just because the world is burning, doesn't mean we can't roast marshmallows.

I still exist. I do still paint. I am pretty tired of sharing on socials, but today I'll make an exception, for the sake of amusement.

Local mini-painter profile!

Say hey to Kyle Maitland – also found at @birdnbrush.

Here’s a bit about Kyle and where you can check out his stuff.

Q1- where can we find you online. Where are you located in the real world?

- I use the handle @Birdnbrush - I am in Toronto.

Q2- What first got you into miniature painting?
-I had to paint those tiny grey fighter ships from Star War Armada

Q3- Do you paint mostly for display? Gaming? Competitions? Personal expression?
-Display and Personal expression, which I don't really separate as categories, because it is important to listen to your painting voice.

Q3- What scale model do you prefer to paint?
-75mm is a great size for most diorama work, before it starts getting too big. I also do a decent bit of 15mm.

Q4- What is your favourite part of the hobby?
-I love telling stories through figures well beyond typical fantasy hero tropes.
Q5- What is your least favourite part of the hobby?
-This is a hobby, I do it to enjoy and enrich myself. If I wasn't enjoying it, it would not be happening. Honestly though, I hate sharing my work and the socials side of things. It's contrived and never feels good.

Q6- Who are some other painters that you look up to/get inspiration from?
-The Impressionists and Post Impressionists (and some of the Neo Impressionists) are big inspirations for me. I find my inspiration and points of interest outside of miniatures, which helps to create something fresh. I think it is very important that we look and find inspiration from nature and the world around us, painting outside of the community in order to help it grow and create something interesting.

Q7- What future painting project are you the most excited about right now?
-I am going to be making a good deal of diorama in the near future and am ready to buckle up and enjoy that process. Gonna go to the stars. Heck, even have a bird piece lined up.

Thanks Kyle for sharing a bit about your mini-painting interests, inspiration and journey.
We’d love to feature more local artists here, so please message me if you are interested in being profiled.
