Lagos-based artist Adeyinka Akingbade (@adeyinka_akingbade) spent four weeks at G.A.S. Lagos developing his ongoing body of work Exodus, which looks at migration within the context of Nigeria’s security crisis. ⁠ During his residency, Adeyinka visited artisans, wood carvers and sawmills, and spoke with industry experts to develop the work further. Intern Kamael Kirkland (@kamaelxk), who joined us through our partnership with Spelman College and the Atlanta University Center Art History + Curatorial Studies Collective (AUC Collective), supported him with research, helping to facilitate his visits and connections.⁠ ⁠ At the end of his residency, he presented the works, opening with a private preview hosted by Bloom Art Lagos and G.A.S. Trustee Ugoma Ebilah. Adeyinka spoke about the beginnings of Exodus and how the work has expanded to consider the experiences of schoolchildren within the security crises.⁠ ⁠ The following day, the showcase opened to the public, with Adeyinka leading visitors through the works before a book-sculpting workshop. There is no place called away. This beautiful work by Nigerian artist Olumide Onaodipe hangs in my home. @olumideonadipe takes what we discard, newspaper, cardboard, produce sachets, and transforms it into something beautiful. I discovered his work through my dear friend Ugoma Ebilah, founder of @mbarikola and @bloomartlagos in Lagos. Ugoma is so much more than someone with an incredible eye. She is a force in Nigerian and West African art and culture, creating spaces for artists, ideas and community to flourish. Seeing her celebrated in the NYT this week made me so proud. I love this piece because it is a daily reminder: nothing we throw “away” actually goes away. And waste doesn’t have to be the end of the story. ♻️🌍 #sustainableart #sustainableartist

Ogún ọmọdé kì í ṣe ré fún ogún ọdún 50.7 × 45.7 cm Acrylic, satin and ink on paper 2026 The piece explores the many friendships I have experienced while growing from childhood into adulthood. Whether acquaintances, close friends, or intimate companions, each has, in one way or another, left a mark on my becoming. Yet, circumstances have caused many of these friendships to fade, and I no longer know the whereabouts of most of them. Some were separated by changes in environment, others by changes in status, while some simply disappeared with time. Ogún ọmọdé kì í ṣe ré fún ogún ọdún is a Yoruba adage that speaks to the difficulty of childhood friendships lasting forever. Through this poignant piece, I explore my struggle to let go of the desire to remain with some friends for a lifetime, while learning to accept the realities of life and embrace who I am becoming. The work also emphasises the importance of loving and treating everyone around us well, knowing that relationships may not last forever. The composition places a young boy receiving a haircut at the center, while a well-dressed couple (his parent)stands in the background. The title “Dbee / Ajebutter” suggests a conversation between two sides of society. Ajebutter, a Nigerian/ Dbee, a Ghanaian-popular slang expression, often refers to someone perceived as privileged, comfortable, or raised with access to a softer lifestyle. The artwork juxtaposes this idea with the grounded, working-class environment of the barber’s space. Join us at G.A.S. Lagos on 23rd July 2026 for Exodus, a presentation of new mixed-media works by current resident Adeyinka Akingbade (@adeyinka_akingbade), developed during his four-week residency. Expanding his ongoing project Exodus, Adeyinka transforms discarded books and found materials into sculptural works that reflect on displacement, survival, memory, and the communities forced to flee violence. Through repurposed books, metal, wood, and school uniform fabric, the works bear witness to lives interrupted while exploring the power of materials to hold memory.⁠ ⁠ Following the presentation, Adeyinka will lead a hands-on workshop introducing participants to his book-sculpting techniques. Adeyinka Akingbade (@adeyinka_akingbade), a Lagos-based painter, photographer, and graphic designer, joins us for a four-week residency at G.A.S. Lagos. His multidisciplinary practice spans painting, photography, mixed media, installation and research, and is concerned with the repurposing of materials that are often discarded or lost to reflect on migration and memory.⁠ ⁠ “I hope to use this opportunity to deepen the Exodus series through focused field research and material experimentation in Lagos. Specifically, I plan to conduct interviews with residents about migration, visit embassies and passport offices to observe the physical spaces of movement, and source discarded materials for new works.
