Last night! Over 80 friends and neighbors came out to celebrate 🎉 Brother Epistles. I am teary eyed just thinking of it. Some many folks from various parts of my almost twenty years in this community. Dance moms. Preschool moms. Physician neighbors and colleagues. Church members. Even former patients! Standing room only. Everyone was lovely ☺️ Thank you @jennifer_gaites for being a fantastic conversation partner #brotherepistles #authorlaunch #memoirwriting #communitylove

In January 2022, my mother suggested I write a children’s book about Alvin— I don’t think anyone, myself included realized how dark of a spot I was in. At the time I didn’t see a way out and did not think I could make it through. The tether that was keeping me here grew frayed, but Alvin provided the grounding, the stability to keep me moving— the lighthouse when I was caught in the darkest storm of my life, in bearing witness to so many unspeakable parts, to showing me how I could exist, guiding me through these lessons and knowing more than he ever let on— he accompanied me on my journey back to myself.

The cursor remained blinking after the only sentence I could muster on that cold dark day in January, “Alvin is an Alaskan Husky from Kotzebue.” 2.5 years later, it finally called out to me and what followed was a flurry of pages, of digging into the deepest parts of the shame and guilt I had carried, the scar tissue that needed removing so I could breathe. This is all to say that my Party Pace Summer soon turned to Flurry-Writing Fall and a finished(?) book — I have no idea what’s next for it, maybe some edits, shopping it around, or putting it on the shelf as I found a world in my wound but I’m no longer speaking from it. What’s next for me is brushing my hair and responding to the 268 text messages that have sat unanswered for far too long, oh and maybe finally going after that Mile PR (track prom next spring!)

Much like getting a tattoo or what I imagine naming a child is like, I told very few people, so if this comes as a total surprise you are in very good company— even when I texted my parents to say I was done they were like with what sooo…
