Big congratulations to @shandamdwrites! 🎉

Shanda started writing in Project Write Now's memoir classes, then joined book inc as a founding member and one of our Memoir Incubator PALs.

Now she’s featured in Poets & Writers’ “5 Over 50” in the November/December 2026 issue, the magazine’s eleventh annual celebration of debut authors age fifty and over.

Shanda is a family medicine physician and a native Philadelphian. She writes about where life, race, and medicine meet. Her memoir, "Brother Epistles: A Sister’s Memoir," is out now from Split/Lip Press.

We’ve been cheering her on from the start, and seeing her work recognized on a national stage means the world to our community.

Read her essay in the issue at www.pw.org.

There’s no deadline on becoming a writer. 🐙 Join our writing community at bookinc.org.

We just had our fourth Write Out Loud at @crazystorybooks and it was full of good spirits! 👻🎃

After a brief check-in where we shared our favorite scary stories, we read “One Need Not be a Chamber—to be Haunted” by Emily Dickinson and discussed what the poem brought up for us.

Then we wrote to the prompt, “I am always haunted …” ✍️ We love how differently each person approached the prompt—some haunted by anxiety or indecision while others had less metaphorical haunts.

We are very grateful to @crazystorybooks for continuing to offer their inspirational space and to all who came out and joined our writing community. We can’t wait to be back again in November! ✍️

It was such an honor to facilitate a creative writing workshop hosted by @teenartsnj in my role as a Community Outreach Facilitator with @projectwritenow🩵💛 and the wonderful @meredithavakian. 🙏🙏We incorporated games, playfulness, breath, and movement to invite creativity, connection, and self-expression through writing. Most definitely my favorite way to guide students into writing. 👩🏻‍🏫✍️✨ Thank you to @asbury_book_cooperative for providing the wonderful space! by @projectwritenow

Last night our @asbury_book_cooperative Write Out Loud theme was RESPONSIBILITY. ✍️

For check in, we shared the adult responsibilities that we dread the most. There were lots of discussions around relationships, future expectations, bills, parenting, and the responsibility to make art.

We went on to break the word “responsibility” up into its parts—response and ability—and decided that rather than associate responsibility with completion of tasks, we would try instead to treat it as the ability to respond. ✨

During the writing session, we chose from a series of four different tasks that needed to be completed. Each task was met with a spooky themed obstacle 👻 that would test our character’s ability to respond.

Join us for our next Write Out Loud at @asbury_book_cooperative on November 10. Or join us TONIGHT at @crazystorybooks!

We read “Legacies” by Nikki Giovanni at @shorehousenj last week and opened a discussion about times we might not have said what we wanted to say and when that might have helped or harmed us.

Then we took some time to write out those unspoken words, freeing the thoughts we've been carrying inside us. ✍️

➮ Every voice matters, every story has value, and everyone deserve a place to write. Spaces like this—where stories are shared, voices are heard, and healing happens—are so important, especially right now.

🔗 Donate today at the link in our bio to keep our expressive writing programs thriving. We are so grateful for your support! ❤️
