POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

My little attempt at this weeks Hocus Pocus @oldskoolchallengeclub @jac_in_a_book challenge! Books that make a magical potion!

I decided to raid my shelves and see if I could conjure up a little something using nothing but book titles. Here’s my recipe for a rather sinister brew…

🫀 A Jar of Hearts
🦴 A handful of Black Water Bones
🌬️ A Single Breath
🖤 A sprinkle of Dead Ground
🌿 A branch from The Thicket

Throw it all Into the Fire 🔥

Gather what’s Left in the Ashes,
As Told Under the Moon.

Stir three times, speak no word,
And pray you’re not the one it heard…

What would you put in your literary potion? And, more importantly, what would your spell do? 🧪

Had SUCH a lush time at the @tealeavesandreads literary festival 🥰

Obviously took no sensible pictures of the panel itself with @authorbythesea1207 - but we had a lovely time chatting about cosy fantasy and our journeys to publishing and how drawing fantasy maps is an artform 😂

I signed so many copies of The Tiny Magic Bookshop, spoke to genuinely lovely readers, was so well taken care of by all the staff and volunteers, and the drive there and back certainly didn’t feel like as much of a mission as I expected it to 🤓

Shall be wearing my VIP lanyard whenever I feel I am not being treated with quite the reverence I deserve and look at my new mug 😍

(Odie also had a good day 🐶)

I’ve not been on holiday for so long that I’d forgotten how lovely they are 😍

It was wonderful to spend a few days in a @forestholidays cabin in Yorkshire - so peaceful and exactly what my heart needed 🧡

Lots of time spent in the hot tub, wandering the forest (and accidentally getting lost), playing Ark Nova (new fave game!), reading in the egg chair, and spotting lots of wildlife 😍

Ok so I'm not even lying when I tell you that I opened this book to start reading it yesterday morning and finished it yesterday evening. I lost time. Where did my day go? I've no idea! I was completely engrossed in the Third book in this amazing Crime Drama. If you've not had a chance to read them GO NOW, go get them! Just don't blame me when you're obsessed with them too! Each book had me on tenderhooks waiting for the next. So much research, love and hard work goes into each of @brittonbookgeek books, and I'm so excited to read more in the future!

This morning I had a bit of time before work to improve my synopsis further. ✍️

Thanks to my latest edits and added words on my WIP I was able to sharpen my outline even more and reduce the word count of my synopsis down to 889 in the process. 💃

Implementing these changes also made me realise that I've finally entangled the messy middle bit of my novel and know now how this part of the story needs to unfold to make it all work. 💪😊

There's still a lot to do for me, but this feels like a big step forward. Yay! 🙌

📚 Book Review 📚

Close To The Edge by Anna Britton (Detectives Martin And Stern Book 2) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Detectives Martin and Stern are shot outside the court. Both are badly injured, but both want to help find out who shot them, despite being told they should not and cannot investigate their own case. Gabe Martin is assigned a missing person case, a young and promising art student, which later becomes a murder case. Juliet Stern is signed off while she recovers. Were the detectives getting too close in their investigation into a human trafficking gang? Is someone from their past back to seek revenge? The more they investigate, the more links they find between the cases, but who is telling the truth and who is hiding something? Someone seems to know a lot about them, both work and personal, but can Gabe and Juliet catch the shooter before anyone else gets hurt or worse?

The book is divided up into days, and the days are divided up into mini chapters headed up with Gabe’s name and told in first person narrative with calls, voicemails, text messages, emails, interviews, news bulletins and social media posts in between. The book is 369 pages long but the story only covers 7 days, a combination which gives the narrative a good pace. Gabe and Juliet are very different characters, but they work together well and are there for each other when they need to be. The narrative combines the current case with Gabe’s memories and blends them together, explaining Gabe’s reactions to some of the things that happen. Characters from the previous book feature again and I looked forward to reading what happened next. The author has a unique writing style with lots of short sections making it easy to pick up and read whether I had a short break or a whole evening to indulge in reading. I don't usually go for books written in this style, but this was well written and I enjoyed it.

It was one of my favourite series last year and I’ve now read all of the books in this series so far.

If you’ve read it too, what did you think of it?

📚JENGA STACK📚

Haven’t done one of these for a while so I thought I would, made up of just some of the amazing thriller books I have on my TBR shelves

I have seen some great reviews for all of these, have you read any? Which ones would you recommend I move up the TBR pile?📖

Jumping on the ‘If they write it, I will read it’ trend - crime/thrillers bookstagram themed! Started with one or two, ended up with…well, all of my favourites.

Any of your favourites here? As a complete aside…HOW is it still raining? Just one day of sunshine at the weekend would be super helpful - trying to keep the 2 and 5 year old boys entertained (and stop them from killing each other) is a challenge! 🌦️🙄

The launch of this year’s @bournemouthwritingfestival at Patch in @bobbysbournemouth last night was so much fun and had such a positive vibe, with a focus on culture and inclusion. The sheer number of events taking place over 24-26 April is astounding and I chatted away to aspiring authors and fellow speakers all evening (you can see from my face that I was less enamoured with having my photo taken with Sunday’s programme 🤣)

The festival is always warm and welcoming to writers at all stages of their journey, which is part of the reason it’s so successful. Don’t forget tickets are on sale now for the different talks, panels and workshops, with a 15% discount if purchasing before 28 February (use Earlybird15 at checkout) I’m going to have a hard time choosing which sessions to go to! 🎟️

📣 Announcement - Bournemouth Writing Festival Speaker 📣

I’m so delighted to finally share that the lovely @brittonbookgeek and I are delivering a panel at @bournemouthwritingfestival on Sunday 26 April!

This is really exciting for me because I’ve attended the festival for the last three years (and had an absolute blast every time) but this is the first year I’ll be one of the speakers 🤩

We’ll be talking about pen names, genres & hybrid publishing. Join us (two experienced authors) in a behind-the-scenes chat about our experiences of having three pen names a piece. We’ll chat about how we successfully pivot between genres, while also navigating self/indie and traditional publishing. We’ll be doing our best to demystify the publishing industry by covering crucial topics such as what it’s like to be a hybrid author, why different pen names are required, and how having a range of genres and pen names is a brilliant idea for authors. A Q&A session will be provided for your burning questions!

Come along, meet us and get more info! The panel ticket is only £10 BUT if you book before 28 February then you can get a 15% discount by entering EARLYBIRD15 at the checkout 🎟️

🔗 Link in Bio!

(I’ll be getting tickets to attend some of the other panels very soon 🙌🏼)

I’ll also be at the festival launch tomorrow night from 7pm - 9pm at @patchplaces in @bobbysbournemouth! Come & say hello if you’re there 🍾
