The Advancing Healthcare Awards for Northen Ireland awarded us the Excellence in Cancer Care award for our Anal Cancer Awareness Day Pilot Project. A real collaborative labour of love, incorporating people with lived experience, charities, a wide MDT and supportive trust. Here @trish.p2019 explains the impact the project had on her. ❤️

💜 Why raise awareness?

✨ Break the stigma – encourage open, compassionate conversations about anal health without embarrassment or judgement.

✨ Recognise the signs and symptoms – including bleeding from the anus or rectum, pain or itching, lumps, changes in bowel habits, or unusual discharge. These symptoms can have many causes, but persistent or concerning changes should be checked by a healthcare professional.

✨ Promote early diagnosis – encourage people to seek medical advice and feel confident discussing symptoms.

✨ Share knowledge about risk factors – including persistent infection with high-risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV), and the importance of HPV vaccination.

✨ Support patients and their loved ones – ensure that everyone affected by anal cancer feels heard, informed and supported throughout their journey.

💜 Awareness saves lives. Conversations can make a difference.

Let’s break the silence, challenge misconceptions and make it easier for everyone to seek the care they need.

🚨Trigger Warning: cancer, mental health and serious mental illness, neglect, death and dying.

Her research explored how people living with serious mental illness perceived and experienced their needs when diagnosed with and treated for cancer. Through in-depth interviews and grounded theory analysis, Laura developed a new theoretical model highlighting how personal experiences and resilience, healthcare encounters and stigma, and the wider social determinants of health can shape an individual’s ability to cope with the complexities of living with cancer and serious mental illness.

💙 World Prehabilitation Day - 16th September 2026

Check out all our prehabilitation themed podcast episodes (link in bio, use the search function to find prehab).

What is prehabilitation?

Prehabilitation, or ‘prehab’, is about helping people with cancer get as ready for treatment as possible. It can begin around diagnosis and continue before and during treatment, with support tailored to the individual.

Macmillan Cancer Support describes prehabilitation as focusing on three key areas:

🏃‍♀️ Physical activity and exercise
Supporting fitness, strength and physical function.

🥗 Nutrition
Assessing and supporting nutritional health, including addressing weight loss or malnutrition where needed.

🧠 Psychological wellbeing
Supporting mental health and helping people manage anxiety, depression and the emotional impact of treatment.

Prehabilitation isn’t simply about getting ‘fit for surgery’. It can support people having surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and other cancer treatments.

Prehabilitation can help improve fitness and nutrition, reduce anxiety, support recovery and quality of life, and may reduce complications and length of hospital stay following surgery.

Prehab should be personalised, needs-based and multidisciplinary. It’s about preparing for treatment, supporting recovery and helping people feel more informed and in control throughout their cancer journey. 💙
