POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
This season, after realizing that the evolution of the whale watching activity was bringing us less joy, we posted less and reflected more. Today, it feels important to share our thoughts with you.

The line between us and the more than human world is dissolving 💙

For those who listen to the oceans, whales have long been recognized as creatures of immense emotional presence and shared memory. As we grow our humility and develop tools to understand them, the depths are revealing intergenerational cultures, structured voices, and resilient social pacts.

2026 has brought us the following:

• The discovery of sperm whale “vowels”: A study published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B revealed that sperm whale click sequences contain acoustic structures that behave exactly like human vowels—specifically identifying distinct “a” and “i” sounds—and diphthongs. Their communication has layered, structural rules that represent one of the closest parallels to human phonology ever found in nature.
• Documented “midwifery” and mutual care: In data published by Project CETI, scientists recorded a wild sperm whale birth where a supportive “doula” squad of both related and unrelated females physically supported the laboring mother and guided the newborn to its first breath. It is proof of cooperative birthing assistance outside of humans and a few primates—showing a culture built on trust and mutual aid.
• Regional dialects and linguistic flexibility: Research mapping sperm whale vocalizations in the Mediterranean discovered distinct regional dialects. Just like human regional accents, eastern whales use a “sped-up” version of the western whales’ patterns—and they have been recorded temporarily shifting dialects to communicate, suggesting an ancestral, bilingual-like adaptability.
• The shift toward legal personhood: These breakthroughs are directly fueling international legal and philosophical debates. Scholars are leveraging this empirical proof of structured language to argue for the expansion of animal personhood, challenging maritime law and conservation frameworks to catch up with our new reality.

We have never been alone in possessing culture and language 🌀
