Goodbye, for now, to Oregon, which has held me through so much over the last few years: two years of grad school and two of freelance, two apartments, a half dozen films, health issues, new hobbies, photo assignments from heat waves to political rallies to a dog food cookbook, and the entire second half of my twenties. I spent a lot of time feeling lost here, like I was behind schedule, like I just couldn’t figure out how to fit. Despite that feeling, and despite what my camera roll (which is mostly nature photos) might suggest, I was not, in face, alone. I found so many good people here- my grad school classmates, my @mosquitofleetpnw collaborators, my occasional colleagues at @opb, mentors and advisers like @freshwatersillustrated and @jlbailey77. I found patterns (like only ever seeing @eddytongming at Kati) and newness (why did it take me so long to find @innodrame @cascadiawild @wetlandsconservancy). I grew here. I’ll turn 30 two weeks after leaving, a week into our next chapter in Virginia, and I am so glad to take what I’ve learned here into this next stage. So thank you to: the white stag, the grief house, the picket line, the Bar West dish pit; the kayakers, the journalists, the kelp enthusiasts, the therapists, the wildlife trackers; the low tide anemones, the secretive beavers, the coyotes that yip outside the walls of the apartment I am about to leave; the Columbia River, the Pacific Ocean, Vermont Creek; Gabriel Park, TwentySix Cafe, and the Duckworth Docks; those who hired me, those who stepped in front of my camera, and most of all, all the other filmmakers wading through the trenches here, sharing gear and gigs and words of encouragement. I’ll really miss the community we patched together here.

IT’S A FOUNTAIN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET! Come learn why at a free screening of THE ELK this weekend! Come see the 30-minute documentary for free at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 25 at the @portlandartmuseum. We’ll do a short in-theater Q&A, followed by a walking tour of monuments that culminates at The Elk itself. Our guide is @cafemama of @aroundportlandtours, who is one of the featured participants in the film. Other film participants will be there, as well. This screening is part of the @adxportland fest at studios and spaces across Portland in October. The screening is supported by a grant from @portlandeventsandfilmoffice and @pdxartsculture, and the film was propelled forward in its earliest stages by a grant from @regionalarts. The screening and tour are free but please be sure to sign up. (There’s a link in the bio, of course.) See you there! 🎥 #makingmonumental

Over 20 people have now sat down with us and told us their story and perspective. We are so impressed by the range of voices and what they contribute to this city - from urban planning, to cultural institutions, retailers, makers, artists, developers and civic leaders.🎬 Their studios. Their work. Their struggles. Their inspiration. Their love for this city and what they’ve built in it. Every single one of them reminded us exactly why this film needs to exist. You can still help us bring their stories to life by sharing the film and/or donating towards post production costs. Thanks to all of you for being here! 🔗 Link in bio.
