I can't help it that the heat of July brings me back to the best place in the world. For friends who were there, you know that Lake McDonald was a sanctuary. Places are as alive as people. They offer something beyond what our words and dynamics are capable of connecting us through. The place is a living, breathing, yet neutral member of a community or family. They ooze with love, with an offer of peace, a background of aliveness when people are awkward and conflicts on this human plane are inevitable. I've found new places that form these living systems, but I'll always remember the squish of damp grass on my bare feet, the feeling of lake weed tickling my calves, the nipping of a sun fish, and wet dirt drying onto my young skin. Does summer make you nostalgic for a place?

Springtime bug dump! I found all kinds of bugs this spring. Bugs crawling around me. Across the street from me. Bugs even wanting to sleep with me!!! Stung by a bee in a garden flooded with the sound of electronic music. Then I watched bumble bees burrow their queen bodies in the ground to rest. Finding and poking at what could be a fire-petrified bug in Topanga canyon. Love in bugs. In love with bugs.

And I shared poems and prose with @1111danceco at the Losing Sleep show, where I remembered the sounds of bull frogs, and the feeling of daddy long legs brushing my lake-soaked feet. Dancing like a human bug, bugged by the joy of seeing my little niece bugs again. Bugged with gratitude and lots else, turns out.

A note from Cal:

LOSING SLEEP was a response to my younger self. It was the actualization of something that I knew deep down back then but wasn’t ready to face. It was standing up there with some of the best people I have ever met & letting myself know that everything is okay, I am safe. Creating dance from what needs to be let go, being present with all of the feelings in real-time—captured in a night or over the course of 2.5 years— & walking away willingly and intentionally. This is the reason I am simultaneously in love with & wrecked by this art form. It is ephemeral. As are we. As are all of the little moments of life that slip past us, that we cling onto. Thank you to everyone who has watched this work over the lifetime of Eleven:Eleven; if there was ever a time you watched us & thought that maybe the work was for you, it was. I love you. Truly. Thank you for letting me create & bearing witness.

Losing Sleep 💙

I feel so lucky to have been part of the eleven:eleven journey. @calatopia creates the most beautiful, honest, intentional pieces and the compilation of them all into one grand story for Losing Sleep was nothing short of incredible. One thing I’ve always loved about eleven:eleven is with every show I feel that I have grown as an artist because the choreo is challenging athletically and vulnerable emotionally. I also am continually in awe of the other dancers in this group and am so grateful for their friendship. There is a sadness with the closing of eleven:eleven chapter but I couldn’t have asked for a better way for it to end ✨
