Week 51 with Adeline (13 months old): This week was all about the water. It started off extremely tough for us, and we had to battle through some confusion and find success wherever we could. This week, we introduced blinds in the water and pushing across the water. We started off doing some memories across the water onto land to try and build confidence, and she did just fine with these, but once we went to more true cold blinds, she struggled pretty badly the first couple days. She kept treating them as marks and wanting to look out into the water more and even went as far as diving under the water looking for the bumper. The harder I tried to push her, the harder she would hunt in the water. This was awesome to see from a hunting standpoint, but not for achieving our next step of growth. After about 3 days of just hammering out memories and some super simple blinds across the water, it finally clicked, and by the end of the week, she was absolutely killing it. This was the first battle we truly have had where I just felt lost. It was hard for me to see her trying and hunting so hard and just not understanding the objective of pushing further to the bank. I did my best to not get frustrated and keep her confidence up the best I could. It was frustrating because she is such a good marker, and on the memories, she was always able to push straight across onto the bank and make the retrieve, but it was not translating into blinds, as she couldn’t get her mind over the water. I feel like this will be something we are going to have to continue working on a lot, as in our hunting environments, we face these types of retrieves quite often. I definitely think it clicked at the end of the week, and I am very excited to see how it translates starting back up tomorrow. We went really hard and had some long sessions all week, so I let her have a good mental break this weekend. On top of the water work, we continued working T-drill both in the water and on land, hunt circle, all kinds of blinds, and angle backs. This was a tough week, but truly, to be in Week 51 and this be the first time I have felt this feeling is a testament to how awesome this dog is!

Week 50 with Adeline (13 months old): this week we continue focusing a lot on blinds, water work, T drill, angle backs, and the newest addition, poison birds. I really wanted to focus extending the distance out on blinds for this week. I feel like we have been doing a lot of short distance work and this has been causing her to pop a little early sometimes and start hunting around instead of holding her line for longer distances. During the first sessions of the week I took her out to an area we have never worked memories or blinds before. Here we could stretch out to 200-300 yards. I kept it simple with just a couple lining memories and these were a challenge for her to hold steady and not pop early. She achieved the goal but you could see in her body language she was fighting the urge to start hunting early. After these reps early in the week I transitioned to some pattern blinds later in the week and she did very good all the way up to 300 yards. I definitely will have to be better moving forward about keeping some long distance reps in the rotation to keep her confidence high on holding her lines until told otherwise. Water work was great as always this week. There is no lack of love for the water with this girl. We worked on numerous different types of marks and introduced poison birds as well. I would throw 3 birds out into a pile as a blind she didn’t see and then throw one out as a mark as the poison bird. On the first day I had to shut her down a couple times as she veered off to the mark. I would quickly reline her and then praise her as she blew past the poison bird. By the end of the week she was running these crisp and had no issues of trying to veer off. We continued knocking out lots of reps in both T drill and angle backs. For a couple sessions we really increased the difficulty and overall she handled it great. This was the first week I extended the distance out pretty far on the angle backs in the water and she had a couple mishaps as she lost vision of the bumper and tried going to the one she could see. I would recall her and run it again until she trusted staying on her line until she could see it. Overall there was a lot of growth this week!

Week 49 with Adeline (12 months old): this week was all about the water. It was time to start taking the same drills we have been focusing on hard for the past 3 weeks into a new environment. Throughout the week we continue working on blinds both in water and on land overall she did great and managed to hold confidence in her lines and had very little issues. I challenged her a little bit more on some of these by throwing some on the other side of the water onto land. These confused her a bit and she struggled. Once she was in the water she wanted to continue looking and hunting only in the water and not push up onto land. I didn’t push her too hard on these and our next session I just implemented a few of these as marks to give her the idea. By the end of the week she was able to crush blinds across the water and up onto land with very little issues. This was fun to see and her confidence staying high with the blinds. The next addition we made was taking the T drill to the water. The first day with this went pretty bad. She had a pretty tough time with casts in the water. She did a really good job of getting turned in the water but she would lose sense of direction and then had no idea which way I was trying to send her. As the week continued I simplified the drill as much as I could. I started off by just doing a pile drill in the water and whistle stopping her and then giving her back casts. After a few of these I transitioned her into the simplest T drill I could and she was much better. After a couple days of keeping it simple she progressed and got the hang of it. She still wants to come a little too far forward on the overs sometimes but as confidence and experience builds this will clean up. To wrap up our sessions we continued working on angle backs to keep getting clean reps under the belt. We did these both on land and water and she has been perfect on these. Overall this week was a tough one for her. Complex drills in two totally new environments plus adding water tested her a lot. She stayed confident and worked super hard and I am very proud of the progress she made.

Week 48 with Adeline (12 months old): this week we continued a strong focus on blinds including pattern, white bucket, and cold. Confidence is still building slowly but surely. Occasionally she will want to stop early or try to start hunting somewhere else but I quickly sit her with the whistle and redirect on her line when this happens. As long as we keep finding success and building confidence her lines will become more consistent over time. The new addition for this week was in line marks. This required having somebody throw out two bumpers directly in line in front of her. With the first thrown being further and the second being closer. The first couple sessions this was a bit of a challenge. She would retrieve the first one cleanly but then wanted to go play with whoever we had throwing out the bumpers or hunt for the second. After quick corrections by the 3rd session for the week she was running the drill perfectly clean and really holding a good memory of that second mark which she wasn’t doing early in the week. We also continued working hard on T-drill and angle backs. Both of these drills are in a great place and we are just focusing on generalization and building as much confidence within the drills as we can before moving out to new environments and different scenarios. We also got back down to the water a little this week and this is something I haven’t done in a few weeks. We did some basic lining on multiple marks. I have forgot how much love she has for working in the water and I need to be better about mixing these in throughout the week because she always turns it up to another level for the water no matter how tired she is.

Week 47 with Adeline (12 months old): this week I really wanted to put some extra focus on blinds and continue building confidence. As we have started moving around to all kinds of different areas and situations she has started having the urge to wander off her line and go hunt or look where she thinks the bumper is or where previous bumpers have been. In the video was our last blind of the week. About 100 yards and had no idea the bumper was there. You can see her fighting that urge and a little hesitant to start but as she trusted the process and stayed on her line she hit it perfectly and you could see the joy in her run back. Two new additions for the week were bucket blinds and hunt circle. Bucket blinds were a perfect mid ground to help continue to build trust on these blinds. Hunt circle went really good as well. She is a great hunter and uses her nose well so these were a breeze. I would throw a couple bumpers into the thickest patches of cover I could find in the pasture and then give her the hunt it up command and whistle while making sure she stayed within a confined area as she sniffed out the bumper. She had no issue and found them super quick each time without leaving the area I wanted her to hunt in. On top of these drills we also continued T drill and some angle back work to keep those crisp as well. Overall there was a lot of progress this week and trust is being built not only on my end but hers as well. Only a couple more weeks till we are fully in duck season mode and she is going to be more than ready!

Week 46 with Adeline (12 months old): this week was a big week for Addie girl. She turned 1 on Friday and got a new camo hoody for her birthday along with all the treats and love. This was also a big week for us in training. We introduced cold blinds for the first time and the ladder drill. Cold blinds are where I throw out a bumper without her seeing it in an area she has never retrieved in before so success is fully reliant on trust. We had some really good reps and some really bad ones. A few times she stayed perfect on her line until she caught wind of the bumper and retrieved it perfectly. Other times she would immediately just want to start hunting and eventually veer off different directions. When she would do that I would bring her back, move closer, and then resend her until she remained straight on the line. As we continue to get more successful reps of these under our belt the consistency will improve. Ladder drill went very well throughout the week. We started off with just 2 bumpers and then worked up to 3. This drill is where we throw out 2 or 3 bumpers in a straight line and then send her to retrieve starting with the closest and working our way out until they are all brought back. Only one time did she try to skip one but with a quick correction she was right back on track and never struggled again. On top of these two new drills we continued working on marking through check down and fall, pattern blinds, and T drill. T was phenomenal this week. Her stops are getting cleaner and there were very few missed hand signals. Overall it was a big learning week and with it still as hot as it is the longer sessions definitely test her but at the end of the day we are progressing each session.

Week 45 with Adeline (11 months old): this week marks our first week in the advanced GunDog phase of @cornerstonegundogs
We continued to focus on pattern blinds, marking through a fall and marking check down, angle backs, and then the new introduction for the week was T drill. We started each session with a couple pattern blinds. Her confidence on these was incredible this week. We were able to stretch out and have success at about 200 yards and that was fun to watch. She is still crushing mark through a fall & check down. Shes never had any issue with this and at this point has became a very good focus on fetching mechanics and sending to place. Angle backs were also solid this week. We were able to do doubles and she was perfect on her openings and staying on the proper line. The introduction to T drill was a bit of a challenge the first day. I mowed a T lane in the pasture for the first couple sessions to help her lining. I would throw a bumper straight at the end of the T and then another to the left or right. We would return to place and I would send her on a line towards the end and for the first couple I wanted to get a few lining memories to keep her from popping and this is where struggles began. As soon as she hit the cross in the T she was wanting to peel off and retrieve the one off to the side. After a couple failures I moved her up to the cross and sent her straight to the end to achieve success. I then backed her up and did the same thing again and she executed it perfectly and as soon as she passed the cross I immediately praised her. After a couple of these I started to add in the whistle stop. This was a challenge for me as well trying to read her and time the stop perfectly at the cross over. Once she got the hang of it she was pretty crisp with just a small mistake here and there. On our last session of the week I took her out where there was no mowed lane and she executed perfectly!
