Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings is one of the most moving works of the 20th century, a composition that transforms simplicity into an extraordinary expression of grief and emotional intensity.

Originally written as the second movement of Barber’s String Quartet, Op. 11, the work became widely known through its orchestral version. Its slowly unfolding melodic lines, rising tensions, and powerful climax create a musical experience that has resonated with audiences around the world.

In this performance, @calebyoungconductor conducts the @calgaryphilmusicians , bringing Barber’s haunting score to life through the gradual build-up of its emotional intensity.

Few compositions demonstrate so powerfully how music can communicate profound human emotions without the need for words.

@calebyoungconductor conducts @helsinkiphilharmonic in Leonard Bernstein’s Overture to Candide.

Composed in 1956 for Bernstein’s operetta Candide, the overture quickly became one of the composer’s most frequently performed orchestral works. The music moves rapidly between contrasting themes, combining brilliant orchestration, syncopated rhythms, lyrical passages, and demanding instrumental writing.

Based on Voltaire’s 1759 satirical novella Candide, Bernstein’s score reflects the work’s theatrical character through its constantly changing energy and colorful orchestral textures.

Here, Caleb Young conducts the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra in Bernstein’s Overture to Candide.

@calebyoungconductor conducts the virtuosic and fiery third movement of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 9 with the @helsinkiphilharmonic

Written in 1945, the Ninth Symphony is one of Shostakovich’s most unusual wartime works. Instead of the monumental victory symphony many expected after the end of World War II, Shostakovich produced a remarkably concise and often playful score, filled with sharp contrasts, irony and unexpected turns.

The third movement changes the atmosphere completely. Its restless energy, rapid rhythms and brilliant orchestration create a movement that feels almost impossible to contain, with the trumpet playing a particularly prominent role.

Here, Marco Cubillas Bolado delivers a spectacular trumpet moment, cutting through the orchestral texture with striking clarity and intensity.

One of our favorite traditions every year. 🇺🇸

There's just something uniquely American, and uniquely Midwestern, about spending a summer evening at the ballpark with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic playing patriotic favorites under the stars with fireworks in the background.

Every piece was thoughtfully selected, and @calebyoungconductor and @fwphil put together an incredible program. Nights like this remind you just how special this country is. ❤️🤍💙
