My friend @carreonsid over sat Checkmat Manila was asking for sine help with back pain and suggestions for strengthening. His training routine was largely made up of traditional "gym" exercises like deadlifts. Stuart McGill, one of the leading experts in back pain, has a great book, 'The Back Mechanic' which he goes into detail about the different types of back pain and injuries and different ways to manage them. Back pain is multifaceted dynamic issue that cannot always be solved with a generic approach to be successful. However, in his book he recommends what he calls his Big 3, which is what he feels almost everyone with back issue could benefit from. In this video I include his big 3, along with some variations, followed by our Jiujitsu Therapy beginning 3. These are our beginner movements that are similar to the big 3. The objective in this approach, both McGill and ours is to help develop recruitment of the small spinal stabilizers to develop control of the intrinsic muscles of the spine to increase stability in the spinal segments. In McGill's 3 he has three movements in the 3 different movement directions. Front to back, side, ans twisting. In ours we combine then into one movement, separating the parts then putting them together.

The intrinsic muscles are small, deep muscles in the spine, pelvis and neck. Although not as big or powerful as rhe outside muscles that mist people train, the intrinsic muscles play an important but often overlooked role in stabilizing each segment of the the spine and more Importantly communicating to the brain the condition of stability of the spine. Unstable segments may send messages to the brain to down regulate the recruitment and strength of the outer, force producing muscles for the safely of the spine. Over working or forcing past these signals may lead to pain and injuries. Much of Martial arts are based on these principles. Break a person's posture and they are not able to resist with their full force because the nervous system will down regulate the recruitment of the muscles to match its ability to stabilize and stay in a safe alignment. Training the intrinsic muscles will improve force production.

"Train Movements not Muscles." In Jiujitsu, it has been my belief that the typical warm up for most Jiujitsu classes cause long term injuries. These routines, usually handed down from instructor to student for generations uses movements taken from other sports or exercises. Exercise science has progressed much farther than what is typically practiced in the dojo's. First, warm ups are not only to get the body "warm" but to prepare it for the activity about to be performed. The more specific the warm up is for the movement the better the effect, not only in warming up the body but in preparing the nervous system to perform the activities involved. Second, no other animal in the world does a systematic versions of "stretching." You will never see a panther getting ready to chase down a gazelle by putting it's leg up on a tree and doing hamstring stretches. Animals so a version of warming up known as pandiculation. They get down into a crouch and creep up on their prey. This slow movement, creates friction between the muscles and joints. The friction helps to agitate the fluid bwtween the sliding surfaces of between muscles, joints, skin, organs preparing it to move quickly by improving its viscosity.

This is the idea behind the 6 movement concept of Jiujitsu Therapy. By using movements most likely preformed in jiujitsu practice, we warm the tissues but more importantly prepare the nervous system to control the muscles in the patterns used. This can further help reduce injuries by improving movement efficiency.

Research on spine and disc injuries has found that the only way to herniated a disc is in flexion or forward bending of the spine. Some believe that there is a limited amount of flexion cycles before disc herniation occurs. If you image how many flexion movements are practiced in jiujitsu warm ups as well as in the practice of jiujitsu itself you can start to see why disc injuries are common in jiujitsu.

Here I am doing our version of "shrimping" which different as we have removed the shrimp part of the movement to avoid flexion of the spine. While I believe this is mechanically a better way to perform the move, it is also safer for the spine. Cont...
