What does food insecurity look like in Australia today? It’s affecting more families, single parents and working Australians than ever before.

This morning on @abcnews_au Breakfast, SecondBite CEO Daniel Moorfield and our ambassador Catie Gett spoke about this, the growing pressure on frontline food-relief agencies and why more support is needed.

Our latest survey of 405 charity partners found that 94% are seeing rising demand for food relief, with 2 in 3 charities having to turn people away.

💚 SecondBite Giving Day is on 15 October. Help us reach our goal of providing 800,000 meals for people doing it tough.

Catie brings a rare combination of lived experience, deep knowledge of food and nutrition, and a genuine belief that everyone deserves access to good food.

Having experienced financial struggles, Catie knows what it means to make limited food and money stretch in a single parent household. She credits her knowledge of food and nutrition with helping keep herself and her daughter fed and well during this time.

And it’s an experience that has shaped her work and led her to focus on sharing that knowledge with everyone.

Catie is guided by a simple philosophy: good food can be nutritious, accessible and simple. It’s something that truly aligns with our work at SecondBite, rescuing and growing fresh food and getting it to people who need it most.

As an Ambassador, Catie will help us share the stories behind that work, tackle stigma around food insecurity and offer practical ideas to help people make nutritious food go further.

When @catie_gett and I first started working together on her cookbook, The Staple Store Cookbook Vol 1, The Moment with @myfwarhurst was right up there on the bucket list. So to hear this conversation out in the world today is a very lovely full-circle moment.

But more than that, I highly recommend listening to this one. It matters. Perhaps more now than ever.

At the heart of Catie’s work is something incredibly simple: helping people cook good food with what they have.

No judgement. No performative wellness. No pretending everyone has the money, time, energy or beautifully stocked pantry to eat the way we’re constantly told we should.

Catie has been doing this work for years, through @thestaplestore and now through this cookbook. And the more I’ve come to understand what sits behind it, the more I think there is something incredibly pure and noble about the project. Meet people where they are. Show them what they can do with what they have. Help them feed themselves and the people they love.

One in three single-parent households lives below the poverty line, and 74% of them are women-led. Catie was once one of them.

There’s a moment in the conversation where she talks about that period of her life and says: “I didn’t feel it because I can cook… imagine living off this and you can’t cook.”

Oof.

Because cooking well when you have very little isn’t a wellness trend or a nice lifestyle skill. It can be the difference between getting by and not. And the simple act of giving people the knowledge and confidence to make something nourishing and delicious from whatever they have available feels like one of the most honest and worthwhile things you can do.

As Catie says, everyone deserves good food. It is one of the building blocks of how we exist.

A bucket-list interview, yes. But much more importantly, a conversation worth hearing.

We’ve never had more information about health.
Yet many people have never felt more overwhelmed by it.
One of the things I appreciated most about this conversation with @catie_gett from @thestaplestore was her reminder that looking after ourselves doesn’t have to be perfect to be meaningful. Sometimes, the most powerful changes come from returning to the basics.
