Passing the torch🖤

Our chief of strategy Marsha Thornton moderated Artist Talks with Quinn Batiste and Cedric Michael Cox who sat down to reflect on mentorship, legacy and what it means to carry the work forward.

Cedric once mentored Quinn and now Quinn is stepping into a new chapter as the lead artist for the letter E in Cincinnati’s Black Lives Matter! mural.

This is what legacy looks like:

pouring into the next artist, trusting their vision and watching them make the work their own.

Thank you, Cincinnati Art Week, for hosting us and creating space for these conversations, these artists and this history.

A new awesome mural was just finished. But I now only see paintings as just one second in time of the whole movie... more to come [deep laughter]

Whew, the ARTISTS 🖤🎨

There’s something special about sitting back and listening to the people who helped build the legacy and the artists stepping up to carry it forward.

Passing the Torch: In Conversation with Black Art Speaks was exactly that. Original lead muralists and new lead artists sharing the stories behind the work, what it means to create something this visible for our community and what it takes to make sure the legacy doesn’t stop with us.

Because THAT is the beautiful part. The art lives on. The stories live on. And the torch keeps moving. ✨

So much talent. So much history. And the future is looking GOOD. 🖤

Black Art Speaks, where art meets social justice

Thank you @cincinnatiartweek for hosting us at CAW Art Market

(1/3)This past week we lost an amazingly talented and caring Cincinnati Artist, Anna Mair.

Many of you may not have known Anna, but she was a very active part of Cincinnati art for a number of years until moving away to be with family.

Anna was a founding member of the Cincinnati Abstract Art Group with myself.

She was charitable with her time and talents, frequently painting for Purposeful Painting, Inc @purposefulpainting513 as well as a yearly contributor to @1001colors Secret Artist event. and donated works to the annual @aeqai_magazine_ fundraiser.

This week I will be honoring Anna’s memory, showing for the first time the body of work I created in response to Anna’s illness.

These works will eventually be exhibited and sold entirely for charity.

(3/3)Anna worked in several positions in the last years of Greenwich House Gallery including Co-Director. She represented many artists in the city and oversaw shows by the @cincyartclub and more. While her passion was always making art, she took pride in helping other artists in any way she could.

About 20 artists made it onto the walls of six Dayton-area properties.
Cedric Michael Cox and Nathan Beard are two of them.

Cedric’s Playing in the Park No. 2 is part of a collection that draws from Dayton’s funk history. Music runs through a lot of his work, so it felt right there.

We first worked with Cedric in 2022 on Welcome Home, four murals in the Avondale neighborhood of his hometown, Cincinnati. This time, he and his team also installed artwork across all six properties.

Member artist Nathan Beard’s Exit Music No. 135 went into the fitness center for its energy and movement.

Residents now come home to work by artists from across the collection, and they’ve told us the new art has changed how the spaces feel.
