Lunar New Year is celebrated worldwide - a time for family, food, and fresh beginnings. Each year is represented by a Chinese Zodiac animal, and this year is the Fire Horse, symbolising vitality, speed, and perseverance! 🔥🐎

To celebrate, we’re sharing what two Migrateful chefs - past and present - love to eat at this special time of year.

Celia explains that to ring in the New year, there is a public holiday lasting at least three days. The first two are mainly spent with family, enjoying festive foods like turnip cake, glutinous New Year rice cake, smiley cookies, and deep-fried dumplings - all symbolising wealth and good fortune. The remaining days are spent celebrating with friends. She shares, “married relatives give red envelopes containing money to unmarried family members and children, to bring good luck and fortune.”

Migrateful Chef Cathy shares that in Hong Kong, there is a tradition to serve Lo Han Zhai on the first day of the New Year because the dish represents self-purification. Lo Han Zhai, also known as Buddha’s Delight, is a vegetarian stew made from colourful vegetables and vermicelli noodles braised in an earthy sauce. It originates from Buddhist cuisine which follows vegetarian principles and the original recipe is said to contain 18 vegetables.

Click the link in our bio to find Cathy’s next class to learn how to make Lo Han Zhai from the master herself! ✨
