Daniel de Paula, ‘abstract time’ (2019)

This work explores the concepts of time and labour. A wristwatch that runs counterclockwise, once belonging to a worker that has since passed away, is wrapped around the equivalent of one month’s minimum wage in the Netherlands.

Bringing together time, memory, and the value of labour, the work invites us to reflect on how we measure a life and what we assign value to.

Karuti’s 8hrs (Hour 1 & 2) drawings, developed towards the end of her residency at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, point to the tension between time and creative practices.
Contemporary capitalism demands that creative practices fit within rigid systems of productivity, while the very act of creation depends upon a form of freedom that resists such measurement.

Brazilian artist Daniel de Paula’s works continue the reflection on time, labour and the structures that contain our lives.

“Rest against / against rest” evokes the obsessive condition in which existence becomes justified through continuous labour.
“Lives / works” takes its starting point from the familiar formula found in artists’ biographies and institutional texts. By placing the two words alongside one another, de Paula exposes the subtle yet powerful relationship between labour and existence: the extent to which what we do has become inseparable from who we are.

Ni Haifeng’s flag presented here quotes the expression “bare life”, introduced by the Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben in his book “Homo Sacer: Sovereign Power and Bare Life” (1995). By studying pure human suffering, the naked life in concentration camps, Agamben

“Four legs good, two legs bad!”
September 4 – November 7, 2026

Lumen Travo Gallery presents a new group exhibition featuring Noor Abed, Ni Haifeng, Jackie Karuti and Daniel de Paula.
Conceptually inspired by George Orwell’s classic Animal Farm, the exhibition brings together four practices that intersect around questions raised by the novel more than eighty years ago: the invisible infrastructures of society, time and its entanglement with labour and money, the oversimplification of political propaganda, and the gradual erosion of collective memory.
Opening: September 4, 17:00–19:00

Cover image: Jackie Karuti, Rhino (Shadow), 2024, drypoint etching on acid-free paper.
